Golftyn CP is a two-form entry primary school situated in Connah's Quay, e-portfolios are used with learners from years 3 to 6
Learners use Chromebooks to create and curate their e-portfolios. Portfolios are pupil-owned, and restricted to view only by Hwbcymru users. They allow learners to curate work they have made in their Google Classrooms, and work created in Adobe Express, J2E and Minecraft.
Many believe the main reason for using e-portfolios is to organise learners' work in one place, however, the primary reason for the use of e-portfolios is to support learners being able to reflect on their learning.
When adding work to their portfolios, learners are asked to think about the learning that has taken place. Initially, learners understand what task they did, however, through discussions with the class teacher they start to understand the learning intentions behind their work.
Once they have added their work, learners are asked to
Give their work a title
Explain what they think they have learnt
Identify which of the Four Purposes they feel have been developed in their work
NB. In years 3 and 4 teachers support learners through reflective practice, modelling how to effectively reflect against the four purposes.
Metacognition is simply thinking about one’s own thinking. At Golftyn, e-portfolios are used to help learners understand why they do certain tasks and how these tasks help them embody the four purposes.
By reflecting on their work and learning, learners become more aware of the skills they’ve developed. E-portfolios encourage learners to think critically about their skills and how they relate to the four purposes, deepening their understanding of these core characteristics.
