8th grade students created their own personal mission statements for an exercise from the Seven Habits of Highly Effective Teens. This activity reflected "Habit Two: Begin With the End in Mind". There's some great personal missions in here that not only echo the spirit of the Portrait of a Graduate initiative, but also embody our "Three B's: Be Kind, Be Safe, Be Responsible!".
The EGMS PTO is excited to kick off the new school year and our first PTO meeting will be held on Monday, Sept 30 from 7:00 - 8:00 pm in the EGMS library. Our agenda will include:
2024 - 2025 Budget and expected expenses
Funding requests
Volunteer opportunities and fundraising ideas
We hope you will consider joining us. In the meantime, be sure to register as a PTO member for the 2024 - 2025 school year to ensure you receive our communications and voting requests. You can also find us on Facebook at East Granby Middle School PTO.
Thank you,
EGMS PTO Board

Our 7th graders went on a fun field trip to Clark Farms at Bushy Hill Orchard on Friday, September 27. They got to pick apples, learn about the business, and do some team building outdoors with the nice weather! So many great pictures from this one!
Our sixth graders get to take a class that gives them a great quarter-long opportunity to demonstrate all of the "5C's" of our district's Portrait of a Graduate initiative: Communication, Collaboration, Critical Thinking, Creative Thinking, and (Empowered) Citizenship. In this unit, Mr. Ziff's sixth graders get to choose a controversial or SEL topic, do some research, collaborate and create, then present to their peers while knowing that they'll be assessed and reviewed by their them! In this particular example, the sixth graders researched and presented out on "tattle-tales"
Mr. Ziff's 8th Graders were learning about first aid and safety strategies. Quinn appears to be demonstrating the Heimlich maneuver on Lylah!
Some of our 8th graders were hanging out at the bottom of the hill during their lunch break. The weather has been beautiful, and the students have been enjoying it.
In Mrs. Ciccarelli's science class, 7th grade students practiced all their lab safety that they learned by following directions closely for a very cool end result. They will circle back to this experiment in their first unit of learning about chemical reactions after completing their intro to science unit. Click HERE to see the experiment in action!
Mr. Dorr's class completed a STEM activity this week. We used a stretch test to determine the effects of cold water vs. hot water on a piece of bubble gum. We measured, recorded our results and determined whether temperature affects the particles in gum.
We have a star race car driver among us at EGMS! Jaxson Burns is in his 2nd season racing in the Wild Thing Kart Series at Stafford Motor Speedway on Monday nights! This year Jaxson secured the divisional Tiger B Championship half way through the season and qualified for a faster division. This weekend he will share his passion, success and plans as he prepares for next season! If you'd like to meet him, he'll be at TJ Burritos on Saturday, 9/21 from 11-1PM.
Mrs. Petersen and Mr. Tomala held their first Student Government meeting on Tuesday, 9/17. Mr. Tomala's room was filled with students from all three grades communicating, collaborating, and critically thinking about ways we can pep up the school climate! They had lots of fun with great activities, and many ideas are already in the works. They even spent some time writing and sharing notes of positivity for all of the EGMS community! We look forward to seeing what the students can do through their leadership to continue making EGMS a great place to learn!
In Mrs. Corey's Family and Consumer Science (FACS) class, students tried their hand at English muffiin pizzas!
In Mr. LeBlanc's class, students started the year with fitness testing. Currently what you're seeing below is Olympic team handball! Students know the rules of passing or shooting about every 2 to 4 steps. This creates team building and cardiovascular endurance. Click HERE to see the activity in action! As you can see, there is a lot of running.
Our 7th and 8th grade students were using the middle school library to collaborate with each other on projects in their classes.
These days are sometimes the best to go outside and get a nice motor break after having some lunch. Mr. Fusco even went out there to play soccer with the students.
Several of our teachers and students have been lighting up the hallways with student work, theme boards, and even a hype board for Picture Day on the 24th! I think some of the faculty (including yours truly) had a little too much fun with this one!
Please review this message from Superintendent Missy Bavaro:
On September 4th and September 5th, the East Granby Public School business office invoiced Chromebook insurance to all students in Grade 3 through Grade 12 through the MySchoolBucks online platform.
If a family would like to take advantage of this optional insurance, payment is due by October 15, 2024. After October 15th, Chromebook insurance will no longer be available to purchase for the ’24-’25 school year.
If you submitted payment for the insurance to your child(s) school prior to receiving the invoice, please allow time for your payment to post. If your invoice still shows as outstanding by September 20th, and you have sent payment into the school, please email Mary Hiney, East Granby Business Manager, at mhiney@eastgranby.k12.ct.us.

In advisory on Friday, August 30, we assembled our students by grade to review some of our school expectations around our "3B's": Be Kind, Be Safe, and Be Responsible! Everything we do falls under the "3B's" EGMS mantra, and students had a fun and creative activity to discuss what these look like.
In Mr. Simeone's Class, students were doing a really cool brain exercise on calculating how long it would take an ant to walk across the country from Dodger Stadium to Yankee Stadium! The class collaboratively thought about factors like ant species, distance, walking speed, and obstacles to give an educated guess through a legitimate thought process using critical and creative thinking. Their presentations were phenomenal and demonstrated what we hope our students will continue to do at EGMS and beyond... truly, a great (and fun!) Portrait of a Graduate exercise of the sixth grade mathematical mind!
Our seventh graders in Mrs. Corey's FACS class were doing some team building exercises for Fun Friday. They also got to try out chopsticks!
Respect, Empathy, Manners, Initiative, and Scholarship. These five values are celebrated every week by the teachers of Grade 7, where five scholars are recognized in front of their peers for being the living examples of these ideal qualities of model students! It's a great way to celebrate the positives in our school culture and, by extension, end the week on an uplifting note! Sometimes Mr. McConnell gets... a little creative in his delivery.
Our School Resource Officer, Scott Menard, was on site for the start of school. While he was in the building making some of the rounds between EGMS and EGHS, he had a friend watching his vehicle... zoom in on the roof and see if you can find it before scrolling further!
After driving up the hill to a see a welcoming beautiful sunrise over the school, we assembled the EGMS students in the auditorium on Day One to welcome them all back to school, especially our new students from Sixth Grade and those who moved to town since last school year!
On Tuesday, August 27, our faculty and staff assembled in the EGHS/EGMS Auditorium to celebrate the start of a new school year! We had lots of joy, connection, and motivation on this first day of 2024-2025 before all students returned the following day on August 28th. Congratulations to our 2025 East Granby Public Schools Teacher of the Year, Jen LoVoi! Also, a special thank you to Brooke Hines and Ryan Hamilton (Both from Grade 8) for representing the EGMS student body in welcoming our district back to work! We had a lot of laughs and even a raffle winner... that came away with a bag full of 182 Origami Frogs named "Sherman". Ah, the creativity and humor of our middle school students... welcome back everyone!
