It's hard to tell who had more fun today... was it the students or the adults??! We had so much fun kicking off the Top Turkey drive and celebrating an amazingly warm day in costumes or orange and black garb. Enjoy the pictures!
Senora Ash's class enjoyed sharing facts about the Día de los Muertos. They also loved listening to examples of music that are used to celebrate the holiday and colored sugar skulls that are representative of those that have passed.
Students in Mr. Dorr's science class dissected owl pellets as part of their ecosystems unit. Once they were able to identify the bones in the owl pellet, they determined what place the barn owl had in our East Granby food web. They even had a guest appearance from Superintendent Bavaro!
In Dr. Schoorens' class, students carved pumpins tha Mrs. Derleth kindly donated. The students also made Jell-O and chocolate pudding for a Halloween party!
In Mr. Ziff's class, students were doing a gallery walk on their research projects and learning from one anoher on a variety of topics in their curriculum.
As a kickoff to our annual EGMS Top Turkey Food Drive to support Friend to Friend Food Pantry, we dress up and have some fun every year on October 31! Our students (and adults) are encouraged to dress up or wear something fun to celebrate the start of the food drive. Please review the guidelines for Spooky Spirit Day if your student would like to participate! Details for Top Turkey are forthcoming as well.
From Mrs. Ciccarelli:
7th Grade Science this week has been labtastic!!!! Students have been doing all sorts of tests to figure out what is actually creating all the bubbles and fizz from our engaging unit phenomena….. the BATH BOMB!
Monday: Students looked closely at all the ingredients individually under dissecting scopes to look for unique physical properties.
Tuesday: Students tested out the solubility of each of the ingredients and noticed that non of them individually made the mystery gas they have been looking for.
Wednesday: Students mixed ingredients together to see which ones bubbled and fizzed and released the gas bubbles like a bath bomb.
Thursday: Students narrowed it down to baking soda and citric acid being the mystery combo and tested these as a reaction in a baggie!
Friday: Students are starting to prepare for their vocabulary content application quiz by doing a hexagonal thinking activity with classmate.
Mrs. Stewart's class is working hard at acting out "The Telltale Heart", written by Edgar Allen Poe!
Project Graduation Bingo Night
Friday, November 8th
East Granby Community Center
Doors Open 6:30 PM; Starts 7:00 PM
We had two themes of awesomeness today. Some of our students (AND adults) dressed with a Disney theme to celebrate our efforts in raising money for those in need of hurricane relief, while others geared up in their travel soccer uniforms or dressed in black to get psyched up for Soccer Under the Lights! Mr. Phelan and Mr. Demelo both had a little fun as well.
We will be having our first Parent Advisory meeting on Monday, October 21 from 6-7PM! Our hope is to build a strong school-to-home connection to discuss our community's respective needs and wishes to support the growth and development of our students. For that reason, items brought up at Parent Advisory will be shared with our faculty at our meetings at school, and items brought up at those faculty meetings will be brought to future Parent Advisory meetings.
While this first meeting will only be offered virtually (with hopes that when people log off at 6:59PM, they'll log on to Superintendent Bavaro's Virtual Reunification Meeting at 7PM), the plan moving forward is to have them in person in the EGMS Library. This meeting's agenda, for the most part, will be casual in format with the table open to discussion. That said, EGMS educators and the PTO do have a short list of topic for discussion to start. Please review below.:
- Smart Devices and Social Media
- Traffic Routines and Procedures
- Nurse's Letter - Follow Up
- PTO: Leadership positions
The link will be sent out on Monday morning. We hope to see you there!
Dr. Faulkner's students are busy and having a lot of fun! In these latest science lessons, students were learning about plate tectonics and earthquakes... with some physical movement representing the different types of earthquakes combined with creating (and eating!) some "sweet" models for how tectonic plates slide and float.
Dr. Angel Schoorens brought our Life Skills students to Barnes and Noble this morning! Students practices shopping, money skills, and asking for help from store employees! They even got to have a nice treat from the coffee shop inside the store!
Mr. Ziff and Mr. LeBlanc combined their Grade 6 classes together in the gym during Period 3 today to have some fun playing collaborative games together and getting their energy out.
One of my favorite places in this building is our greenhouse, and I'm sure that I'm not alone in feeling that way. The plants... the fish pond... the alternative seating for getting work done... check it out!
In our commitment to fostering empowered citizens, the EGPS community will actively support hurricane relief efforts. This initiative not only showcases our dedication to service but also aligns with our Portrait of a Graduate, emphasizing the importance of community engagement and compassion. We encourage all families to join us in making a positive impact during this critical time. Together, we can make a difference!

All participants will receive some swag to take home! To register, click HERE or call the EGPL at 860-653-3002.
The election for 2024-25 Student Government officers has concluded. Great job by all who ran for an elected position! The results are in, and here are the officers for 2024-2025 Student Government:
Office of President: McKenzie Cormier and Sydney Bloom
Office of Vice President: Alexa Bristol and Payton McPherson
Office of Treasurer: Darsitha Nair
Office of Secretary: Roma Caravello
In Mrs. Corey's 6th graders were finishing up their "eggsellent" math component of their egg unit, and 7th graders were making braided pizza bread. Both grades move on to sewing soon!
From Mrs. Ciccarelli, 7th Grade Science Teacher:
7th grade science classes have been hard at work with their new science unit. Students have been trying to figure out where all the gas bubbles come from when you put a bath bomb in water. Are they inside of it? Is there a chemical reaction happening? Is new matter forming? These are all things that we have been discussing as we have been creating models of the science in action that we have been observing through hands on activities.
Now that we are a little more than halfway into the first quarter for 2024-2025, please note some of the following reminders and requests from our faculty and staff:
Traffic Flow and After School Pick Up
If you arrive before 2:05, you may either park in the HS Lot in any available spot or veer to the right at the fork to join our single file car line. After 2:05, please only turn right at the fork and join the car line. All car line traffic must proceed through the traffic circle to pick up students in the traffic circle (and not before the traffic circle). When in doubt, please go where Mr. Phelan is pointing you to go.
If you are picking up your child early from school, please either call in advance of your arrival or write an email ahead of time so we may have your student ready to go. We also ask that your early pick-ups be no later than 1:50PM, since the single file car-line has usually already started to build up by then. Thanks in advance.
Chromebooks
Please make sure that students are charging their Chromebooks regularly at home at night before coming to school. Please also continue to encourage the safe physical and digital usage of the Chromebooks, since they are a critical tool for learning here at EGMS. Lastly, please echo to your students that they should keep their login information secure and private so that nobody else logs in under their account.
The Independent Middle School Student
Middle school aged children are in a key stage of development as they transition from the K-5 world to the 9-12 ages of schooling. One of the most important cornerstone skills for our middle school students to learn is self advocacy. In the spirit of this, we encourage students with questions or concerns over the course of the school day to work with the adults in the building as they navigate through their world one moment at a time.
For that reason, we recommend that parents please also encourage their students with concerns at school to speak to their teachers or other trusted adults in the building first. If students come home with further concerns, we encourage parents to reach out to teachers and staff directly to establish a line of communication. We're all in this together and look forward to supporting them with you through this stage of development.
In Mrs. Petersen's class, students in 7th grade worked collaboratively this week to study a region within sub Saharan Africa. They collaboratively read, researched, created posters and communicated their learning through presentations!
On October 2nd, we celebrated our amazing custodians who keep things going everyday! We're all super grateful for Craig Cody and Leonard Jackson for their care, their attention to detail, and their modelling of kindness, safety, and responsibility at EGMS. Happy Custodian's Day to Mr. Cody and Mr. Jackson!
Students that are new to East Granby this year connected with some of our long-time students in friend groups to do some bonding activities.
Mr. Simeone's Sports Club ia always a hit from season to season and year to year! This week, the students in Sports Club were playing flag football in the old gym on the EGHS side of the building.

In Mr. Ziff's class, 7th graders were working collaboratively with back yard games in various stations, including some of my favorites like KanJam and Cornhole!
Mr. Berardy's 7th graders were hard at work in the EGMS library continuing the learning with coding and Lego robots!
