Traditionally, since it first started in 2010, April 2nd has been called "Light it up blue!" day to raise awareness and show support for those with autism. Our understanding of autism has certainly grown and progressed significantly since then. To that end, in recent years, people within the community of autism have been vocal about shifting our thinking about changing the color of support from blue to red (link below for reference) as a matter of moving from "awareness" to "acceptance". To honor this and in consideration of those that have followed the tradition over the years, we would like to do our own version of awareness and acceptance of autism in our community by doing a "light it up blue and/or red" day on April 2 at EGMS. We hope to make that Wednesday a colorful day!
Many thanks to Mr. Ziff (PE/Health teacher), East Granby Youth Services (EGYS), and the Farmington Valley Health District (FVHD) for collaborating to do some lessons related to making healthy choices. Specifically, our 8th graders learned about the ill effects of vaping, alcohol use, and marijuana in terms of body changes, social changes, and addiction. The first day was a workshop full of simulations of what happens when people are under the influence and how decision making and hand eye coordination can be impaired. On the second day , Justine Ginsberg from FVHD reinforced this information and also taught about prescription drugs, addiction, and how to get help. It was meaningful... and it was also fun! We encourage our 8th grade families to discuss the workshops at home.
Collaboration was in action for Mrs. Ciccarelli's 7th grade science students. They were exploring the 11 different organ systems that make up the human body. They will each end up becoming an expert on one of the systems and share out with their classmates next week for a mini research project.
Dr. Schoorens' class is at it again with the creative thinking! These students are having a really fun year in this class while learning some great skills and getting chances to express themselves. Check out these paintings they created during their "Cookies and Canvas" activity!
Mr. Berardy's class has been doing some great work with robots and coding skills this quarter! Students construct the robots, then they train them to follow certain instructions or paths. It's a great way to build the foundation of "speaking" in the languages of computers and technology!
On March 17th, EGMS wore lots of green to kick off the school spirit week leading up to "Rock of Ages" taking place on March 21 and 22. We had lots of fun!
Check out this fun fundraiser taking place at the East Granby Public Library on Saturday the 29th and Sunday the 30th of March!
In Dr. Schoorens' Life Skills class, students used their counting, cash handling, and communication skills and celebrated with a well earned movie event in the MS Commons! They were treated to some goodies, some popcorn, and some Moana 2!
From Mrs. Ciccarelli:
Next week, on Wednesday, March 26, there's a free opportunity for any student who is an athlete between the ages of 8-25. The reasons for EKG testing is to be proactive in your child's health. They are finding that some children have heart diseases that go undetected in your basic yearly physicals. Using this screening can detect serious heart conditions such as Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy (an enlarged heart muscle)
Data shows that each week, sudden cardiac death claims the lives of more than 60 young adults in the US.
Using this free opportunity for a very noninvasive screening can save a life.
Mrs. Stewart's Art Club students took advantage of some beautiful weather and went outside to the pond! Spring is definitely here!
The EGHS Seniors hosted the adults from various parts of the district in an epic battle on Thursday, March 13. Representing EGMS in the game were Mr. Phelan, Mr. Fusco, and Mr. Horan. Many EGMS students came out to cheer them on and to see some other familiar faces from Seymour (Mr. Esposito and Mrs. Karlowicz)! What a fun game and a great turnout! The seniors were victorious with a final score of 47-41.
In Mrs. Ciccarelli's science class, "cell bucks" were in action to review the cell organelles and their functions. Students also had some fun playing spoons as a review game and writing on the desks!
Mr. Fusco's Film Club meets weekly, and this week, they took advantage of the warm weather by doing some outdoor filming in the structure by the pond at the bottom of our hill.

EGMS students were caught showing kindness to other students. These students received some home made New York style wood fired legendary pizza from Mr. Ziff for displaying kindness and making the right choices to help their peers.
From Ms. Chaloux in General Music:
The class is working hard on their guitar technique and has learned pitches on the first three strings, the G Major scale, and also learned about rhythm. Please enjoy their class performance of "Twinkle, Twinkle" from this past week as this demonstrates the work they've done thus far! (Click on the photo to hear it)
We'll cover strings 4, 5, and 6 over the next few weeks as well as start to learn some basic chords. Please reach out if you have any questions!
In Mr. Ziff's health class, seventh grade health completd their research projects and doing a gallery walk on the dangers of electronic devices, social media, and what to be aware of with the future of artificial intelligence.

EGMS had a blast while celebrating "Read Across America" the week of 3/3-3/7! It was fun for the EGMS students and adults to be festive with the themes for each day during Spirit Week and get some much needed recreational reading in! Many thanks to our EGMS Student Government Advisors, Mr. Tomala and Mrs. Petersen, for putting in a lot of dedication, time, and effort to making this a fun start to the month of March!
In eighth grade Spanish, students created their own food trucks representing the culture and cuisine of Spanish speaking countries. Several students even made food from their food truck menus to share with classmates to try authentic dishes.
In Mrs. Petersen's class, students did research projects on Japan and Korea. Topics of student choice are in full swing in 7th Grade Social Studies!
In Dr. Faulkner's class, students were getting creative with the topics of genetics and evolution!
