In Mrs. Corey's kitchen classroom, our EGMS students have been having fun while baking several varieties of cookies. Mr. Phelan had the chance to try a few (they were great) and contribute to his own personal weight management (I had to walk a few more steps).
Abraham Deng is a former "Lost Boy" of Sudan, and he came to visit EGMS students in all grades on Friday, March 4. When he was just 10 years old, he was forced to flee his home amid fighting and gun fire. He was separated from his family and walked in the desert for months to find safety at refugee camps in neighboring countries. In 2000, he was resettled in the United States with 37 other "Lost Boys" all sponsored by Catholic Family Services of Hartford. Abraham shared stories of resilience, perseverance and hope with our students.

In our ongoing mission at EGMS to make kindness the norm, we had a Purple Spirit Day on February 17, 2022. The color "purple" was well represented by our students and staff, and people were in great spirits for the day! "Kindness is doing what you can, where you are, with what you have". - Raktivist
Mrs. Provencher's class took advantage of the abnormally warm February day by trying to replicate a linear, quadratic or exponential function with a tennis ball outside on the hill on Thursday, February 17.
We are excited to announce that three of our eighth grade students have won first, second and third places in this year’s Abigail Phelps Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution Essay Competition. February 12th, East Granby Scouts participated in the annual Scout Klondike Derby. East Granby Middle School was represented by Noah Bouchard, Ella Hayes, Cal Thompson, Caitlin VanNeil, Logan Nicole, Nathan Russell, and Colin Daly.
There were over 280 scouts from multiple states making up 40 separate patrols. They competed against each other on two identical courses, 20 patrols on each. Prizes were awarded for 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place on each course. We had some East Granby Middle School students help win 3 of those 6 ribbons awarded. Congratulations to Noah Bouchard for leading his team to 1st place on one of the courses. Ella Hayes for winning 1st place as a part of the first all girls patrol to win a Klondike derby in our district, and Cal Thompson for leading his team to 2nd place his course.
Each course had 5 stations, called towns, scattered throughout the woods. The scouts had to use a map and compass to find each town, all while carrying 100% of their gear on their backs. At each town, the scouts had to demonstrate a set of scout skills, ranging from life saving and first aid to knot tying and wilderness knowledge to building a fire and boiling water and more. Each set of skills was judged on a scale from 1 to 5 and balanced against the overall time required to finish the course. A demanding day, both mentally and physically.
Congratulations to these students for a job well done!
Congratulations to all of our Quarter 2 - 6th & 8th Grade PE Students who earned the Physical Fitness Award for passing all four components of the physical fitness state test. (PACER, Curl-Up, Push-Up and Sit & Reach). Here are some of our recipients!
EGMS shared the Great Kindness Challenge week at EGHS during the last full week in January. Each day, we had a spirit day with a color theme for different kindness practices (ex. Green for Gratitude, Orange for Helpfulness, Blue for Encouragement). Students were also able to take part in some fun activities like making a schoolwide kindness chain, where each link had a kindness quote or a positive affirmation (like "I will make the world a kinder place by ______"). We would like to extend a special thank you to the EGPL for coming in and making kindness buttons with our students that week!
