EGMS Parents and Guardians, please be advised that there's been a recent and significant uptick in bathroom vandalism in the boys' bathroom at the end of the hall by the entrance to the MS Gym. While it suffices to say that we have had our share of incidents spread over the course of the years here at EGMS, we discovered a combination of vulgar and racist language written on the walls and stalls, a damaged stall door, and multiple vulgar drawings of body parts... all from late morning Tuesday 3/19 to mid morning Wednesday 3/20.
Needless to say, irresponsible actions like these create an unsafe and unkind environment for all EGMS community members that use the boys' bathroom. Actions like these also require an exhaustive shift of how we use our human resources that would otherwise be maintaining other building functions to keep all students safe. For that reason, we began the practice of regulating the use of the boys' bathroom this week. It started with me letting students in with a key, then transitioned to me stationing my traveling desk by the bathroom door. Moving forward, teachers will only let students out one student at a time to use the boys' bathroom from their classes, and they will also monitor use of the lavatory from period to period and day to day. Boys will also be prompted and encouraged to use the bathroom during the lunch waves while going in two at a time while under hallway supervision. We plan to reassess the effectiveness of this process week to week.
In the meantime, we urge all of you to talk to your students about the true impact that actions like these create for our community. As always, please feel free to reach out if you have further questions. Thank you.
Save the Date for Drama Club’s performances of Into the Woods! Shows are Thursday March 21st through Saturday March 23rd. Tickets will be available online starting March 1st for $15. Come supportive your theater friends! Go to the following LINK for more details!
Also, especially for our EGMS students that will be representing the EGMS community when attending these shows, please demonstrate proper etiquette while watching the show by doing the following:
Put the cell phones away and on silent mode.
Please stay quiet and respectful during the performance, as these students have been working hard for months to perform on stage.
Please sit with the right people that will set you up to be successful in these items (i.e. if you know you'll be talkative and distracting with your BFF, maybe choose to sit with your family!).
Thanks in advance, and we look forward to seeing you at the show!
At EGMS Starbase Club, we had some successful engineering challenges! The marble tower was as tall as me.
Mr. Simeone's group had loads of fun after school in the EGMS gym for Sports Club.
In Mrs. Corey's Family and Consumer Science (FACS) class, the 7th graders are all remembering their sewing skills and cutting out their patterns. Meanwhile, the 6th graders are learning them for the first time while making "ugly critters".
From Dr. Faulkner: This is Henry, a newly hatched painted turtle. He was found on the sidewalk in front of the school by a seventh grader. Henry is staying in Dr. Faulkner's room until it is warm enough to let him go into the school's pond, and in the meantime the 8th grade is studying him. Some 8th graders wanted to name him Ross for Bob Ross, the painter -- pretty clever! But no, his name is Henry. He said so.
EGHS students were mentoring some of our EGMS 8th graders who are interested in playing football next year. It was a fun experience for our students who are getting excited for the fall of 2024!
Check out these photos, including some outdoor physical fun, a walk with "Oscar", and some thinking happening in the EGMS Library with equations and chess. Photos courtesy of Ms. Dewey!
From Mr. Hurlburt:
In addition to "Chopped", students are now using their understanding of atmospheric conditions to create geographic information system (GIS) maps that support the argument that ocean currents drive extreme weather in the US. They also made clouds prior to diving into tornadoes and hurricanes!
One of our 8th grade students was working with an EGHS student and showing both of her displayed samples of work.
Mrs. Provencher's students worked hard at math, then worked OUT at the end of class to get their energy out!
It's nice to see our students going out of their way to be kind and have some fun during the school day!
Students from the high school program at the Greater Hartford Academy of the Arts (GHAA) put on a show for the students of EGMS on Monday, March 11 by acting out skits pertaining to situations in the lives of tweens and teens that were unkind, unsafe, and irresponsible. In other words, we brought in folks in the literal world of Drama to act out and pretend like they were in the metaphorical world of "drama" with hopes that our students could watch, reflect, and learn about how to keep our school climate drama-free. Our students were given the opportunity to ask questions of the actors who stayed in character while they answered the questions. Our students asked great questions and put some of the characters on the spot, especially when our students felt that the characters needed to take on a different perspectives. That said, the "Looking In Theater" covered some tough and heavy topics that we happen to have seen in our halls on a variety of levels, including bullying, body shaming, racism, sexism, homophobia, social media drama, anxiety, and depression. The work was outstanding, and our students were respectfully engaged. We feel confident that it had that positive climate impact on the social and emotional development of the EGMS students.
Grade 6: Payton McPherson
Grade 7: Nathan Bourdon
Grade 8: Whitney Johnson
8th Graders in Mrs. Stewart's ELA class are in project mode! As a culminating project to their book clubs, students are conveying how a figure in their novel used resiliencies to persevere.
At EGMS, 8th grade students performed a read aloud of some of their favorite childhood books to their peers. Over at Seymour, Mr. Phelan made a guest appearance in Mrs. Karlowicz's class on the same day... it was nice to meet some of our rising 6th graders for 2024-25!
Students in Ms. Semyanko's Life Skills class worked on food art! Check out some of the smiles and samples involved in this lesson.
In Mr. Berardy's makerspace, students were using critical thinking and collaboration while playing the game of "Risk" and using K'nex kits during "blended learning" lab. The game looked pretty intense, and the K'Nex projects looked like a lot of fun to make.
Some of our students at EGMS made a trip to EGPL to have some fun at the Dry Ice Workshop! Please have some fun browsing the pictures and read the following note from Amy Thompson from the EGPL:
Hi teachers!
We had a blast tonight. This was a very successful workshop. We had 19 kids attend and the kids really enjoy themselves. Every hand was raised to be a helper in this workshop! They should all fully understand sublimation now. :)
Thank you for helping spread the word and making our program a success.
According to Dr. Faulkner's 8th Graders, even Charlie the Skeleton had an opinion about the last week of February coming off of a full moon weekend. On to March!
In Mr. Tomala's class, students created board games to create a fun and competitive way to learn about ancient and classic civilizations. Students made game pieces, boards, and most importantly, content questions for other students to demonstrate the knowledge they learned along the way! Students then had the opportunity to play each other's games at the end of the project cycle. It was a great and fun way to have students demonstrate collaboration, critical thinking, and creative thinking all in one project!
In Mr. Hurlburt's class, students were doing karaoke and songwriting about atoms and molecules! It's always fun to see Quinn bring out the guitar and sing along with Lily (click on their picture to see and hear the performance), and Alex performed the (ahem...) "Atoms Family" with confidence (but not for video on the blog!).
