On a winter's day, the temperature outside went up into the 70s! Mr. Dorr's classes took the opportunity to go outside to explore the interactions of living things with the environment. Check out some of the work by our future scientists down by the pond.
One student shows off his fully assembled Lego robot, while the other two use their voices to make the robot move. Students also program these robots to sense distance and navigate through an obstacle course.
7th grade CAD class is in the process of designing tops. We will be 3D printing them for a class spinning competition.
Students in Mr. Dorr's grade six class are using the new online NGSS science program called ONPAR. This is an online classroom assessment system, purchased this year. ONPAR focuses on NGSS content concepts rather than the language of the test. It engages students and brings the content alive through the manipulation of data, variables, and outcomes.
During Ms. Nelson's blended learning lab, students were doing a team-building exercise in the MS gym. Students from multiple grades were included, and they all worked together. After hearing the basketballs from the hallway, I walked in and was invited by the team of students to join them. What a great way to finish the week going in to the long weekend!
7th grade students have been working incredibly hard on their research projects about Ancient Egypt. This project provided students with an opportunity to choose a research topic, dig deep into inquiry and communicate learning in a format of their choice. Their focus, creativity and format for their projects was student-choice driven. During the learning opportunity, students engaged with multiple nonfiction and informational texts to gather information and notes of their topics. Students then designed and created projects to present their learning. The end result led to the creation of multiple music videos, documentaries, presentations, games and even an Egyptian Fashion Magazine! Please talk to your students about their work and ask them to share it with you! It’s amazing!
At EGMS, we strive to promote recycling as a major part of our initiative to keep our planet healthy! They do a phenomenal job while having fun working together. Take a look at some of their work!
During lab time, students are engaged in a variety of activities. Some do their academic work while enjoying the greenhouse, while others do enrichment activities like doing work with fish, such as trout and salmon. Either way, the 8th grade science room is a fun and productive place to be. Check out some of the activity below!
After school on Tuesday, several of our EGMS students had fun baking peanut butter cookies in our Family and Consumer Science room. The end product was delicious and did not last too long!

Students met through the months of November and December. Students sang songs of their choice from Broadway musicals and the Big Screen. Most of our favorites were from "Wicked" and "The Greatest Showman." We also sang holiday songs a week before the winter break. We have some very talented singers and all of the students did a great job!
Check out these photos of our 6th graders carrying out a lesson on surface area in Mr. Simeone's class. The objective was to design tents and determine the cost of materials based on the surface area of the pieces they used.
Our 6th graders adopted a Hawksbill Sea Turtle (named Coral) as part of their endangered species project in Mr. Dorr's class. Each student chipped in a contribution, and it was completely student driven. We are very proud of their efforts!
Local author, Rick Collins, works with 8th graders in their reading and writing journey in Mrs. Stewart's classroom!
On December 13th, 2019, EGMS joined the district in hosting Pajama Day. The purpose was to show our support for CCMC through fundraising and awareness for children with cancer.
Rockets were launched by our EGMS Rocketry Club on this beautiful Fall day in November. Dr. Faulkner's crew was able to launch several rockets way up in the air with an audience of parents and teachers!
EGMS and EGHS students had the chance to meet with State manufacturers in the aerospace business at the Connecticut Convention Center. Students had the opportunity to interact with professionals in the field and see what job opportunities might be available for them "down the road"... literally and figuratively! Below, some of our EGMS students had the chance to do VR interactive work, interview with job representatives, and look on at our state governor, Ned Lamont.
Students grew their own pineapple in the greenhouse and had the opportunity to have some!
In November, students from 6th grade had the opportunity to do interactive learning on a 30' x 20' map on the stage of our auditorium! Specifically, the students were making observations about the geography on North America and how the map was labeled. They were able to observe where different languages were spoken in regions, and they saw how that was represented on the map to indicate the diversity of the continent.
On this nice fall day in October, Dr. Faulkner took the club out of the greenhouse to enjoy our woods and the pond at the base of the driveway.
On October 23rd, the 7th grade students worked on team building with fun outdoor activities at Springfield College!
In 7th grade Social Studies, students analyzed how trade shaped Africa's early history and discussed the wealth of Mansa Musa.
On Monday, October 7, 2019, Twenty East Granby Middle School students participate in Multiply Your Options is a one-day conference for 8th-grade girls aimed at exposing the students to female role models in the fields of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM).
This is our 4th year participating in this conference. The purpose of this program is help more women and girls to explore STEM career options and to also help middle school students start early in their career awareness.
Parents, please take some time and review the link below from the American Lung Association regarding vaping. The earlier we all teach our children in East Granby about the ill effects of vaping, the better!

On Wednesday, October 31st, sixteen of our East Granby Middle school girls participated in a career exploration conference to learn more about manufacturing in Connecticut. The “Making It Real” Summit was a one day conference aimed at exposing middle and high school girls to female leaders and practitioners in the manufacturing field. East Granby Middle school was one of 12 schools to participate in this summit which was geared specifically toward engaging young women and inspiring the next generation of leadership and talent about technical careers and the manufacturing process. During the conference, students engaged in a mobile manufacturing lab and contributed in two problem solving workshops both involving skills in teamwork, communication and construction of a product. Additionally, students engaged in dialogue with 6 female practitioners working in the field of aerospace and advance manufacturing.
Below are two of our students' groups that placed first and second place for their construction in the K’Nex Kompetition.

The Greenhouse Club is starting up this Tuesday (tomorrow). The club will meet twice a month on Tuesdays through December. Students will clone plants from cuttings, raise seedlings, prune plants, and learn horticultural skills in the greenhouse. They'll also be doing science experiments indoors, doing nature crafts, and going for nature walks outdoors. The cost is $25 to cover materials. Students can enroll on paper in the office, or online with EG Park and Rec at https://eastgranbyct.myrec.com/info/activities/program_details.aspx?ProgramID=30161
It’s time for the Rocketry Club! If you’d like to make things fly, hover, and maybe even explode, then the Rocketry Club is for you. Join Dr. Faulkner for this four week program. Students should plan to be available for all four weeks of the program (Oct 29, Nov 5, Nov 19, Nov 26). Students will build the Estes rockets in the first three sessions, then hold a lift-off on the last day of the program. In addition to rocket construction, the club will conduct some rocketry experiments and learn to fly drones. Please note that the meetings are on Mondays and there are not late buses. Sign-up is open until Tuesday, October 23 and is limited to 12 students. Students can register either with application forms from the office or directly on the Park and Rec website at https://eastgranbyct.myrec.com/info/activities/program_details.aspx?ProgramID=30159
Today we released our fifth butterfly from 8th grade science. We are participating in citizen science by raising these monarch caterpillars indoors, tagging the butterflies, and releasing them. If they are seen or found their tag numbers can be reported so data can be collected about their migration to south-central Mexico. They fly over 3,000 miles! Safe journey, friends!
It was so nice to see many of you at the EGMS Open House last Thursday evening. I also appreciate your flexibility and attendance at the pre-program featuring Scott Driscoll of Internet Safety Concepts. I hope you found the session well worth your time.
Hi Parents and Guardians! Interested in an evening book talk? Here is the book we will discuss and share thoughts ~ very informal! I do have a few copies, if someone would like to borrow one, please let me know. I will set a date for an evening in October. Thanks!
