We will be beginning a new advisory group for parents to connect with EGMS community to discuss ideas that can enhance our school to home connection and improve our school community. Generally, we plan to rotate these meetings during months when the PTO is not meeting. Please stay tuned for separate correspondence on the details, and thanks in advance for your interest! We do plan on having a virtual option to expand access to families and faculty that may not be able to make it in person. After collaborating with the EGMS faculty's School Improvement Committee, some topics that we hope to discuss at this meeting include:
- The Social Emotional Student: What we're seeing at school, what we're doing to address it at school, and hearing about what works (and doesn't work) at home
---> Cell Phones and Social Media
---> Upstanders vs Bystanders and Middle School Relationships
---> Coping Skills
- The EGMS Lunch Rooms: The whats, the hows, and the whys
The meeting will end promptly at 6:45PM to allow for families to attend the town meeting at the EG Community Center that starts at 7PM.
In Mr. Ziff's 6th grade iLead class, students were working in groups to create business products and ideas to sell to the class as they work on their presentation and job related skills.
Eugenia Semyanko was, well ... surprised by Irene O'Connor from WFSB 3 Channel News. The "Surprise Squad" paid a special visit to Ms. Semyanko on Thursday, February 22 to celebrate her for her dedication, passion, and amazing ability to connect with our students at EGMS. The news cast will be coming to Channel 3 news in the next couple of weeks. In the meantime, please enjoy some photos of the visit, and please stay tuned for details about when this will be on television!
Please come and support our EGHS Pops performers on the 29th!

In Mr. Hurlburt's classes, seventh graders were doing chemical reactions over the past week or so! The most recent chemical reactions were the best tasting ones... smores!
Friendship Club met for the third time this year. Students spent their time building towers from plastic cups, blowing bubbles, and making bracelets. Students also participated in an egg toss game. It was great to see the students' creativity and friendship!
This group is having tons of fun creating go karts and putting them to good use in the MS Gym!
Mrs. Corey's seventh graders made some Mac N Cheese in class on this fun Friday!
In this hands-on workshop just for teens, we’ll work together to explore and investigate the wonders of frozen carbon dioxide — also known as dry ice! Workshop participants will touch a cloud, get fog poured on their heads, taste “dragon’s breath,” and make their own fog-filled bubbles! Led by Talewise.
Book Clubs around the theme of Resilience are in full swing in Mrs. Stewart's 8th grade ELA classes!
Mr. Ziff's group of sixth graders became more comfortable being in front of an audience with presentations during the one minute presentation challenge. There's a ton of critical thinking, collaborating, and communicating for students in this class en route to them beocming empowered citizens.
EGMS students are making their brains work after school on Thursday afternoons! This week, we had a bridge challenge, where Alex Bissell made a bridge with a suspended length of close to 30 feet! Some of our other students created go karts in the MS Gym space.
EGMS students had a fun activity during the lunch waves sponsored and run by the East Granby Public Library. Students made kindness buttons and shared them with others who wore them proudly throughout the week!
Students had a fun opportunity to share candygrams with other students. Many thanks to the EGMS PTO and to all of the parents for making this happen, as this was a huge hit during the lunch waves (and maybe a little bit beyond) on February 14th!
The 8th graders released our tiny trout from the hatching baskets this week, and now they are swimming freely in the big tank. Already one larger one has emerged as the bravest trout, newly named Nemo, and the students are enjoying watching "fish tv".
Congrats to these two superstars for their roles in the upcoming production "Into the Woods, Jr"! Kayla Lengyel will be the narrator, and James Cavanaugh will play Rapunzel's Prince.
Gny. Sgt. Cecilia Kozlowski, horn player with "The President's Own" Marine Corps Band, met with members of the 6th Grade Band on Tuesday. She spoke about her experience as a professional musician. She listened to the group perform one of their pieces and gave some constructive feedback.
Students had a blast dressing up like the teachers, but I think teachers had even more fun dressing up like the students. I think I was given detentions from eight "Mr. Phelans" for dress code violations, jumping up and tapping the door frame, and having my cell phone out. Fun was had by all!
Special shout out to Mrs. Dempsey for even going wacky-tacky with her hair!
