As we conclude this term of mini soccer, it's impossible not to feel a deep sense of gratitude and excitement for the progress our girls have made. After a term of mini hockey, the return to soccer was met with enthusiasm, energy, and a strong desire to learn. The girls carried over the structure and discipline they developed in hockey, along with a growing sense of teamwork and ball movement.
Our Grade 1 players concentrated on mastering the basics of soccer, focusing on advancing up the field and crossing the ball to score. Individually, they worked on dribbling, receiving, and turning, learning to create a "J" shape in their movements to open up space from defenders. A key emphasis this term was on spreading out and avoiding bunching up, a significant milestone as they began to understand the importance of space and movement.
Our Grade 2 players took their skills a step further, focusing on shooting and refining their first touch. They learned to use their peripheral vision to move the ball and anticipate their next play. We made a point to rotate players, giving everyone the chance to experience different positions and develop a well-rounded understanding of the game. This allowed the girls to explore new roles, boosting their confidence and adaptability on the field.
Throughout the season, we emphasized making each lesson fun and engaging, while gradually building up to game situations where the girls could apply their skills. From dribbling drills to friendly scrimmages, we saw remarkable growth in their understanding of the game, teamwork, and love for soccer. We participated in five mini festivals, both at home and away, helping the girls appreciate the experience of hosting and being hosted.
Here's to more learning, more fun, and many more goals in the seasons to come.
