Literature Week

The theme ‘Once Upon a Treetop’ led to a wonderful immersion in literature across the school. Kicking off with a costume parade featuring almost every book character imaginable, from Captain Haddock to Tintin, Batman to Rapunzel, a variety of (Where is) Wally’s and villains… and even Bagger Vance (in headmaster form), the week began with a buzz of excitement.

With a vibrant program, we were privileged to host a variety of guests to underpin the week. The ‘Hooked on Books’ team helped to develop excitement and wonder, highlighting a number of new ‘reads’ for the children, which dovetailed beautifully with the chance to browse through the shelves of ‘Books2You’, emerging with shiny new books clutched proudly in their hands.

The highly-regarded Michelle Linde (author) and award-winning Chantelle Thorn (book illustrator) gave fascinating insight into the production process of books, with some fun practical activities, too.

A visit to Nottingham Road Primary School by our Gr 6 & 7 team was a real highlight. The time spent chatting and reading to the Notties Junior Primary was incredibly valuable for all involved, with smiles, giggles, and chats punctuating the morning.

An opportunity presented itself for some ‘Clifton Campies.’ This involved creating new campfire stories around the fire at the Lapha, using Clifton characters such as Colonel Greene, past Headmasters Mr Forbes, Mr Haworth and Mr Jenks, as well as the odd inclusion of Goatman and some other nefarious characters. Excellent results and a good few laughs rang through the woods.

And suddenly Literature Week was over. Athletics Day and half term beckoned, and our Captain Underpants’s, Bear Grylls’s, Cinderellas, Batmen and company headed for a well-deserved break.
