Hike to Grindstone Cave - 10-11 August

Following a busy morning of sports fixtures, our intrepid hikers made their way to Injisuthi for a night in Grindstone Cave. Having been safely delivered by Mr Xulu, the route began with a lovely meander towards Yellowwood Forest, with its crystal clear stream, perfect for an investigation from our curious crew.

Urged on by barking baboons, we continued the upward journey, taking time to appreciate the view as we climbed higher and higher. Mr Neary was a great encouragement, and before too long we happened across Shower Cave with its refreshing… well, shower… perfect to refill bottles and head along to our resting spot for the night: Grindstone Cave.

Replete after a tasty supper, and after some impromptu shadow puppet show from some, together with a close look at the glow-worm Mr Neary had found (not a bad night light!) we drifted off to the gentle sound of water seeping through the rock face and with a cloudless night - perfect for star-gazing. Snoring? What snoring?

Day broke with a beautiful sunrise which brought into focus the different facets of rock and fresh shoots of grass as it rose… it may have focused on some weary hikers, too. With brekky in the belly it was mainly downhill back to the Injisuthi campsite, save for a few Eland and some tactical stops to admire the changing scenery as distractions. A quick splash in the stream to catch a few crabs and find some interesting stones, we concluded the hike shortly after.

A night away in a cave, some time forging new relationships, the shared bond of achievement… our adventurers can be very proud of themselves.

Sincere thanks to the Capitol Crew for their efforts with supporting the hike and to the tireless Mr Xulu for his efforts in getting us to and from Injisuthi safely. Thank you, too, to the children who accompanied us on the hike - wholehearted effort at its finest. Mr Quinn and Mr Neary.
