Trip to Cheese Factory & Stock Sale Auction - 24 July
Our Grade 4s went on a fun trip to a local cheese factory, and it was such an interesting experience. As soon as we arrived, the smell of fresh cheese filled the air, getting us all excited.
We began with a brief introduction to the cheese-making process. They explained how milk from nearby farms is transformed into cheese through various steps.
Then, we got to see the production line in action. We watched as big vats of milk were turned into curds and whey, with special ingredients. Learning about how the curds are cut, stirred, and shaped into cheese was a new experience for many of us. The aging room was incredibly fascinating as well. We saw rows upon rows of cheeses maturing to develop their unique flavors and textures, all prepared to be shipped to stores.
We then went on to the Eberson's farm to learn about livestock sales. We began by understanding what characteristics define a healthy bull. The farmers explained that a quality bull should have a robust build, clear eyes, and a shiny coat. They also consider factors like muscle tone and the bull's movement. It was fascinating to see the bulls up close and assess their condition.
Next, we learned how a cattle sale works and got to sit in the auction ring with the bull in front of us. We walked through the bulls that were going on sale, and the children had to choose which bull they thought would fetch the highest price. Their winner received a cap from Bonsmara Cattle South Africa.
As far as farm visits go we were spoilt and enjoyed our day out learning new things and being together.
