Mandela Day - 17 + 18 July

It was with great enthusiasm that the school embarked on their ‘67 minutes for Mandela’ initiatives, commemorating the 67 years that Nelson Mandela invested in social upliftment.

With ‘in-house’ focuses, the Senior Primary engaged in some tough removal of vegetation removal alongside our stream (Grade 6). Grade 5 assisted the maintenance staff in cleaning up the school, raking and bagging leaves and maintenance of the campus hedges. The organic material will be crushed and used as compost and mulch for the herb garden and soil/earthworm container.

A concerted focus on the removal of Bugweed around campus also took place, too.

In addition, the Grade 4s harvested their sunflower seeds for packaging and distribution, chopped wood and collected litter, also collecting and processing the sunflower stalks for kindling.

The Junior Primary children collaborated with Nottingham Road Junior Primary School and embarked on a fun-filled morning of 106 minutes to commemorate what would have been Nelson Mandela’s 106th birthday. In the true spirit of Ubuntu, the children all came together to enjoy the Clifton Campus and get to know one another.

Time was spent in Top Woods, at Bobsleigh Hill, and in Headmaster’s Woods, where they enjoyed reading a book together. At the end of the day, the children taught our Notties Primary friends the song "Bayete."

The Pre-School children made 67 tubs of playdough using homemade playdough made by the teachers and children, food colouring, bubblegum essence, and glitter! The 67 tubs will be distributed to Siyakhula Preschool in Rosetta and Sikhulile Midlands Community College Preschool. Playdough is a classic childhood favourite that’s been around for many years and provides hours of fun. It’s the perfect play activity – it’s squishy, colourful and there’s no wrong or right way to play. We hope our friends at  Siyakhula and Sikhulile have fun playing!!

It was a truly memorable day!
