KS4 & 5 Animation Competition

Introduction

In the UK National Curriculum Key Stage 4 is towards the upper end of Secondary or high School. This represents young people aged approximately 14-16. Key Stage 5 would be 16 -18. We are aware that all schools will have different experiences and there is no expectation that a particular type of software will be used.

It would be expected that whatever software is used is able to export a widely accepted file format and a single file type would be expected to be able to be generated At KS4 we would not accept a Scratch submission as we would expect someone with an interest in animation to have moved onto something more suitable.

Animation is difficult. Budding animators can be scared off the more advanced software, but, some will persevere. So if the animation is 2D, the technical competence would be expected to be good, but there may be some flaws in a 3D submission. Either way, these young people should be good storytellers, with a clear narrative that is communicated well.

The competition

The competition is to build a 5-minute maximum animation around some key terms.

The submission will be 2 files. One is the animation and the other is a short film explaining the STEAM problem-solving process that you went through. You need to show your understanding of the STEAM problem-solving phases, namely Analyse, Design, Build and Evaluate.

You can use the attached rubric to assist you.

Every student who wants to submit can.

The key terms identified for KS4 are

1) Character (https://www.viacharacter.org/character-strengths)

2) Future world (https://sdgs.un.org/goals)

3) Positive Mental Health
