Animation FOBISIA 24
Exploring the world through the power of Animation
Introduction
BIS HCMC Warmly welcomes applicants to the 23 - 24 FOBISIA Animation Competition. It is open to students in KS2 - KS5 and will be focused on key terms that will be released soon on the key themes page (est Dec 4th 2023).
The competition is software agnostic, it doesn't matter what will be used. However, as we progress up the ages the level of expected complexity will rise, and so will by its nature limit the software options available.
Learning resources are available on the resources page. The focus for the resources will be on Blender, as this provides the most challenge at zero entry cost (assuming the ownership of a suitable computer).
The key dates are listed below. Any further questions please do not hesitate to contact me at colin.astbury@bisvietnam.com.
Software suggestions
Free software that is available (in no particular order).
Scratch (https://scratch.mit.edu/)
Blender (https://www.blender.org/)
Unity (https://unity.com/)
Paid software that you may have access to in your school environment.
Maya (https://www.autodesk.com/products/maya/overview?term=1-YEAR&tab=subscription) (Education licences available)
Adobe Animate (https://www.adobe.com/vn_en/products/animate.html)
Lots and lots of other options are available, this is intended to only give a taste of the range of tools you could use.
Key Dates
Monday, October 2nd. Competition launched with the release of themes. Before then, training material is to be released every few weeks between October 2nd and December 4th.
Email colin.astbury@bisvietnam.com to be advised of updates, including the inevitable updates to the FAQ section (which will appear below as they begin to come in)
Monday, April 1st – The deadline for schools to submit their champions to us for judging.
Monday 15th April – Winners will be announced.
Assessment
There are 3 "competitions", KS2, KS3 and KS4 and 5. Each will be judged with an age-appropriate application of the rubric attached here. I use the word competition in speech marks as producing a 5-minute video and explaining choices will be an achievement and everyone who participates will have achieved well.
Prizes
Winners, (or highly commended) will have their animations displayed on this site as well as all entries receiving a certificate of participation. I am working on sponsorship, but there is not a guarantee at this stage.
Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ's)
Question - How do we submit?
Answer - After the 1st of December, the registration form will be taken down and replaced with a submission form. Permission to display any work with a first name and school will be requested
Question - Is stop motion animation acceptable?
Answer - Yes. I want to show the skill in animation, not just making a simple GIF
Question - Can students work in teams? Is there a limit to the number that can work together?
Answer - If you want to work in teams, please, be my guest, but be aware that that brings another level of complexity in terms of project management, another key pre-production document.
