Biden became the 46th president, and the 45th person to hold the position (President Grover Cleveland had two non-consecutive terms). Harris became the 49th person to be Vice President. The event hosted only a select amount of people, due to COVID-19, and a large military presence was seen due to security precautions. People in attendance of the inauguration included the 3 former presidents and their families (Barack Obama, Bill Clinton, and George W. Bush), the family of former vice president Mike Pence and, as many people pointed out on the internet, Senator Bernie Sanders. AfterLady Gaga performed the national anthem,Harris was sworn in. She did so with 2 bibles: one from Regina Shelton, a close friend, and mother figure, and the other from the late Justice Thurgood Marshall, the first Black member of the Supreme Court. After that,Jennifer Lopez, more commonly known as J. Lo, sang a medley of This Land Is Your Land and America the Beautiful.Biden was sworn in as President of the United States shortly after. He was sworn in on a Bible that has been in his family, since 1893. Biden then gave his inaugural address, where he reflected upon what has happened to our country, and laid out his hopes for the future. In his speech, he said “To all those who supported our campaign, I’m humbled by the faith you’ve placed in us. To all those who did not support us, let me say this: Hear me out as we move forward. Take a measure of me and my heart.” Biden also held a moment of silence for the over 400,000 people who have died in the US due to COVID-19. After Biden’s address, country singerGarth Brooks sang Amazing Grace. Then,Amanda Gorman, the nation’s first-ever youth poet laureate (someone who won awards for their creativity and/or intellect) delivered an inaugural poem. During her poem, she said “But while democracy can be periodically delayed, it can never be permanently defeated. In this truth, in this faith we trust. For while we have our eyes on the future, history has its eyes on us.” Afterward, Rev. Dr. Sylvester S. Beaman gave a benediction (an invocation for divine help). The ceremony ended shortly after, and Biden, accompanied by former Presidents Obama, Clinton, and Bush, went to Arlington National Cemetery to lay a wreath at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier. Congratulations President Biden and Vice President Harris!
