People Running for Mayor

The Boston Mayoral Race

On November 2nd, Bostonians will flock to the polls to vote for who they want to be the next mayor of the city, and for the first time ever, the two candidates are women.

At the beginning of 2021, incumbent mayor, Marty Walsh, resigned as mayor of Boston to become the United States Secretary of Labor in the cabinet of Joe Biden, and City Council President Kim Janey quickly became the new mayor of Boston. But after coming in fourth place in the preliminary election, she endorsed Michelle Wu in the general election.

The general election is on November 2nd, and the two candidates are Michelle Wu and Annissa Essaibi George, who are going head to head in last minute campaigning.

Michelle Wu has served on the Boston City Council and planned to go against Marty Walsh in the election before he became Secretary of Labor. Senators Elizabeth Warren and Ed Markey have endorsed her.

Annissa Essaibi George, known as an ally to Marty Walsh, started her campaign in January 2021 and unsuccessfully ran for City Council member in 2013, but got on in 2015. She has been endorsed by state Representative Kevin Honan.

This will be the first time two women face off for mayor of Boston, and acting mayor Kim Janey was the first woman to be mayor of Boston. As the tension builds, we will soon know who will become the next mayor of Boston.
