Autism Awareness - Anything But Typical

Anything But Typical, by Nora Raleigh Baskin, isn’t a normal story. The tale of the 12 year old autistic boy, Jason Blake, is far from usual. Instead of following the common, mountain like plot, where there is a longer rising action, climax turning point, and falling action, the plot reminds me of a ski lift. We start lower and slowly work out way into a higher and happier story. There isn’t a long conclusion, but the reader is left with an ending to ponder. The book is incredibly enlightening. At first, we are frustrated by how others perceive Jason. We share that feeling with the main character himself. The reader learns to understand how hard it is for an autistic person to live in a neurotypical world. A new outlook on the world is introduced through Jason's point of view.
