English 9 Curriculum Outline Spring Board

UNIT 1: Coming of Age

Essential Questions:

  1. What does it mean to “come of age"?

  2. How do authors and speakers persuade and influence an audience?

Unit 2: Coming of Age and Defining Style

Essential Questions:

  1. What makes a good story?

  2. How does an artist define his or her style?

Unit 3: Coming of Age Comparing Themes and Defining Style

Essential Questions:

  1. Why is theme and tone important in literature?

  2. How does an artist define style through theme and tone?

Unit 4: Coming of Age and Defining Style

English 10 Curriculum Outline

Essential Questions and Goals:

Upon completion of this course, the student will:

1. Will gain an appreciation of our literary heritage and a familiarity with works of quality literature.

2. Develop a higher order reading comprehension

3. Articulate the relationship between the expressed purposes and the characteristics of different forms of literature

4. Understand the important points in the history of the English language.

5. Gain language competence in English usage and in writing essays, biographical or autobiographical

6. Narratives, business letters and creative pieces.

7. The ability to assess various forms of information and to evaluate them critically.

8. Learn effective individual speaking and listening applications

9. Stress academic research skills, including writing a research report

10. Develop reading as a recreational activity

Unit 1 - The American Dream

  • To analyze representative texts from the American experience

Unit 2 - The Power of Persuasion

  • To interpret a text in consideration of its context

  • To analyze an argument

  • To create and present a dramatic scene about a societal issue

  • To define and apply the appeals and devices of rhetoric

  • To analyze, write, and present a persuasive speech

  • To examine and apply syntactic structures in the written and spoken word

Unit 3 - American Forums: The Marketplace of Ideas

  • To analyze and create editorial and opinion pieces

  • To identify and analyze fallacious reasoning in a text

  • To analyze how writers use logic, evidence, and rhetoric to advance opinions

Unit 4 - The Pursuit of Happiness

Unit 5 -An American Journey

  • To analyze a writer’s complex writing and stylistic choices

  • To create a multimedia presentation

English 12 Curriculum Outline:

Credit 1: Perception Is Everything Unit

Essential Questions:

  • What does it mean to be a stranger in the village? (EA 1)

  • How does perspective influence perception? (EA 2)

Credit 2: The Collective Perspective

Essential Questions:

    • What role does literature play in the examination of recurring social issues?

    • How can a dramatic performance reflect a critical perspective?

Credit 3: Evolving Perspectives

Essential Questions:

    • What literature from Shakespeare's time in relevant today?

    • How does Historical, Cultural, and Feminist viewpoints assist in understanding literature?

Students are to take Cornell Notes on the attached units. Each unit must have 5-10 pages of notes before the student can attempt the unit test. ACE educator authorization is required to take the test. Students may use Google Docs to take notes, but must show original note taking skills that are approved by your ACE educator. Students will need to write a plot outline for each work. For poems, students will need to annotate the poem. Use the following for assistance:
