Choose a photograph of an animal to work from. If you’re printing or bringing a photo from home, it should measure 8”x 10”. The focus should be on the animal’s face, not the entire body.
On the photo, using a ruler, divide the page into 1” sections and draw a vertical line from the top of the page to the bottom page. If the photo is vertical you will have 8 – 1” spaces. If the photo is horizontal, you will have 10 – 1” spaces.
Turn the page and do the same. You will end up with a grid consisting of 80 squares, measuring 1”x 1”. Number each space.
On 16”x 20” manila sketch paper, create a grid that measures 2”x 2”. Number each space the same way you numbered your photo.
In pencil, carefully use the grid to create a line drawing of the animal. Add details as needed.
Once you have the animal drawn correctly, trace the image only onto good paper.
Using a variety of charcoal, begin to add value and texture to complete your drawing.
Be sure to use both kneaded and vinyl erasers to help simulate texture. Remember, your eraser is just as much a drawing tool as the charcoal itself.
You should have a full range of values and a resemblance for your animal portrait to be considered complete.

ALTERNATIVE ART ASSIGNMENT:
Choose 5 or more figures to use in a composition.
You may look online or through magazines for people in action.
If needed, you may cut or print them out to trace.
They must vary in size and position.
On sketch paper, play around with the placement of the figures. If you’ve cut them out you may glue or tape them into place.
Smaller figures should go behind the larger figures to create a sense of depth.
Once you have a good composition, trace onto white drawing paper using contour lines only.
Keep it simple and add only the details needed to make the image interesting.
Create a background or setting for your figures. It may be real (landscape or a room) or imaginary (interesting shapes or design).
Outline your figures and background image using a medium sized black marker.
Using your pattern exercise as reference and a fine pointed black marker, begin to fill in the figures and surrounding spaces with a variety of patterns and textures.
You must use at least 7 different patterns and textures.
You may leave white spaces (as long as they seem purposeful and the image seems complete).
You may repeat the same pattern or texture, although not next to one another.
