Choose 3 artists. Write two pages on each artist focusing on 3 significant works of art from those artists (6 pgs.) (Standards 5.4)

Choose a style that interests you and do several sketches.
If you are unsure about which to choose, do a sketch for each one then choose your best idea.

Finish using tempera, acrylic and/or house paint.

ALTERNATIVE ART ASSIGNMENT:
Choose 5 or more figures to use in a composition.
You may look online or through magazines for people in action.
If needed, you may cut or print them out to trace.
They must vary in size and position.
On sketch paper, play around with the placement of the figures. If you’ve cut them out you may glue or tape them into place.
Smaller figures should go behind the larger figures to create a sense of depth.
Once you have a good composition, trace onto white drawing paper using contour lines only.
Keep it simple and add only the details needed to make the image interesting.
Create a background or setting for your figures. It may be real (landscape or a room) or imaginary (interesting shapes or design).
Outline your figures and background image using a medium sized black marker.
Using your pattern exercise as reference and a fine pointed black marker, begin to fill in the figures and surrounding spaces with a variety of patterns and textures.
You must use at least 7 different patterns and textures.
You may leave white spaces (as long as they seem purposeful and the image seems complete).
You may repeat the same pattern or texture, although not next to one another.

ALTERNATIVE ART ASSIGNMENT:
For this assignment, you can either work from a photograph of yourself, or another student.
You may want to make several preliminary sketches to decide what pose and composition you want to use.
Choose the subject you want to use, take a digital photograph, and print it out.
Use masking tape to tape off a border on the watercolor paper.
Apply a grid to the printed image, using a ruler. Apply a grid (The grid should have squares that are at least 1 inch in size. You may use smaller squares if you wish.) to the 16” x 20” watercolor paper and transfer the image (using the grid method) to the 16” x 20” watercolor paper.
***When drawing with pencil on watercolor paper, be very delicate, and do not apply too much pressure.
Choose a limited palette of watercolors. This should consist of three or four colors. You can mix new colors from this palette to create new colors. You may use no more than five colors. Test the colors you want to use on a scrap of watercolor paper, and show your final choice of a limited palette to me for approval.
Use the printed digital photograph as a reference to paint the image on to the watercolor paper.
Each square should be of a different color, and the same color square should not touch a square of the same color.
Be aware of presenting value within each of the squares.

ALTERNATIVE ART ASSIGNMENT:
Choose a subject matter, it must be representational.
Do several compositional sketches.
Once you have a good idea and strong composition, layout your composition onto a piece of oak tag.
Cut and/or tear pieces of magazines that have the desired colors and textures you need. Make a folder to keep all your pieces in so they don’t get lost.
Glue the pieces down.
Be sure to use gel medium and place it under and over each of your pieces.
Remember, it may take several layers of paper before a finished surface is realized.

ALTERNATIVE ART FINAL: Choose two museums that you have visited the website. In a two page well written essay, explain which museum do you find more significant? Use details from the website to support your opinion.
Extra Points: Bring in a ticket stub from any museum. Must be signed by your parent!

Find one or more photographs of landscapes to use as inspiration for your painting.
On sketch paper, create a border.
It must not be any smaller than one (1) inch.
It may be irregular (vary in width and/or use a curvy or jagged line).
In the center sketch a landscape being sure to have a distinct foreground, middle ground and background.
Use pattern and repetition to fill in the border. The pattern may or may not be related to the landscape image.
Once you have a good idea and well balanced composition, trace onto good paper.
Choose a warm or cool color scheme to paint your landscape.
You may mix and layer colors as needed.
You may use fan brushes, tooth brushes, etc. to create texture.
Choose the opposite color scheme to paint your border design.
If you painted your landscape using warm colors, then paint your border using cool colors or vice versa.
