ARTIFACT - any image included in your portfolio. this could be a finished artwork, images that show planning, a collage of process shots and experimentation, etc. Your portfolio must include 15 artifacts. -- see great examples of process artifacts at the bottom of this page!
IDEA IS "VISUALLY EVIDENT" - the idea can be inferred by the viewer or reviewer based on what they SEE in front of them (subject matter, composition, symbolism, elements, principles of design etc.)
PROCESSES - physical and conceptual activities involved with making works of art and design (AKA the intentional decisions that you made while creating this piece that may or may not be visually evident. Write about the decisions that TRULY supported the idea you were communicating in the piece)
SYNTHESIS - the integration of materials, processes AND ideas (they relate, connect, align and support one another)
EXPERIMENTATION
trying new techniques, materials, methods or approaches
PRACTICE
working with a technique/material/approach to demonstrate mastery -- showing how you've gotten better at something, or gained more control over it
REVISION
improving upon already completed or in-progress works.
taking feedback or self-reflection and adjusting an artwork
MARK-MAKING
Mark making describes the different lines, dots, marks, patterns, and textures we create in an artwork. It can be loose and gestural or controlled and neat. It can apply to any material used on any surface: paint on canvas, ink or pencil on paper, a scratched mark on plaster, a digital paint tool on a screen, a tattooed mark on skin…even a sound can be a form of mark making. Artists use gesture to express their feeling and emotions in response to something seen or something felt – or gestural qualities can be used to create a purely abstract composition.

PRINCIPLES OF DESIGN
Asymmetrical Balance - visual balance achieved by unlike halves
Symmetrical Balance - when the image is mirrored/the same on both halves
Radial Balance - balance radiating outwards from a central point
Movement/Rhythm - a predictable variation of a pattern
Pattern - the repetition of something
Unity - a sense of oneness or wholeness, when everything works together
Isolation - something purposefully separated from others, creates emphasis
Juxtaposition - purposeful placement of unlike things to create a contrasting effect
Contrast- a stark difference between things
Emphasis - making something stand out (can be achieved in different ways)
Scale/Proportion - the size relationship between one thing and another, and to the whole
POINT OF VIEW
Bird's Eye - from above looking downwards
Worm's Eye - from below looking upwards
Eye Level - at the eye level of the subject/viewer
Macro - extremely close up
Close-up - where the main subject takes up most of the frame
Far Away - a distance from the subject
PHOTOGRAPHIC COMPOSITION
Rule of Thirds - main subject is off to the the side rather than centralized
Simplicity - subject(s) are related, avoiding distractions
Depth of Field - purposeful use of focus to draw attention to your subject
Compositional Framing - where something in the image "frames" the subject, focusing on a smaller area of the composition
