1) open ended (not one concrete answer to the question) ; allows opportunities to explore different ideas
2) personal to the artist
Student's original question was: "How do moments change a person's life?" Notice how broad it was and how the student made it more specific.
Do some quick revising of both questions as needed, THEN pick the question that you are MOST excited about so that we can focus on it in our next activity...
Step 1: Write your revised version of your FAVORITE question at the top of your paper on both the FRONT and the BACK. (same question, just write it on both sides to help with the activity).
Step 2: Pass your paper to the RIGHT. The person who receives the paper is Peer Reviewer #1.
Peer Reviewer #1's job is to write their name in the first box, then to TELL you something about your question that is strong or working well, to ASK you a question about your question, and to GIVE feedback to make your question even stronger than it already is.
Step 3: When Peer Reviewer #1 is done, pass the paper to the RIGHT again. The person who receives the paper is Peer Reviewer #2 and their job is to give a second peer review.
Step 4: When Peer Reviewer #1 and Peer Reviewer #2 are done, pile up the papers in the center of the table. Once all papers at your table are piled in the center, pass the whole stack to the next table.
Step 5: Each person take a paper and write all of the names of the people at the table in the Crowd box. After writing all the names, read the question at the top and come up with as many materials, processes, composition strategies, and mark-making techniques as you can that could relate to that topic.
For example, if the question is about fading memory:
Material: charcoal (easily smudged or erased)
Process: leaving construction paper out in the sun until it fades
Compositional strategy: Contrast due to selective blurring/shallow depth of field
Mark making: smearing/smudging
Step 6: After you have added as many materials/processes/compositional strategies/mark-making methods that you can think of related to the question, pass the paper to the next person and keep passing until you end up with the question you started with. When all Crowdsourcing is done, make sure the paper gets back to the person who created the question in the first place.
Step 7: When you get your paper back, use the feedback on both sides of your sheet to help you revise your question to make it even stronger. Write your new question down in your sketchbook or in a place where you will have access to it for your homework.
