BREATHE ALCOHOL TESTING
PASSIVE ALCOHOL SCREENER (PAS)
To protect the health and safety of students in our district, a PASSIVE ALCOHOL SCREENER (PAS) will be used at school sponsored events. This passive, non-invasive, test does not require a mouth piece; it requires only that a student speak or breathe into the Micro-phone like device. The events where the PAS may be used will include, but are not limited to, proms, dances, concerts, overnight activities, athletics events, field trips or any other school sponsored activities or events. Any open containers, such as water, Gatorade, or Nalgene bottles, may also be tested using the PAS.
The administration will make reasonable efforts to ensure reliability of the screening instrument used (PAS). It will provide appropriate training for those administering the PAS. The administration will determine the manner by which students will be tested: an entire group or random selection by lottery. The administrator or designee at such events has the authority to test and retest any individual suspected of being under the influence.
If a student tests positive for alcohol consumption with the PAS, the following steps will be taken:
1. Parents/guardian will be notified and requested to take the student; and/or
2. The Police may be called to take the student into protective custody; and/or
3. The student will be disciplined according to the student handbook policy; and/or
4. The student will be barred from attending this school-sponsored event, or any other school-sponsored event.
Any student may refuse to take the test. However, any student refusing to take the test will be denied entrance to the school sponsored event. The student’s parents will be contacted and the student may face disciplinary action.
