ADULT BASIC EDUCATION

The Bureau of Community Education and Adult Services in the State Department of Education is responsible for managing federal monies available for Adult Basic Education. With the enactment of Public Law 91-230 in 1964, federal funds have been available to local educational agencies and others through the State Education Agency to provide educational services to adults 16 years of age or older.

It is the purpose of Title XIII, P.L. 95-561, an amendment to the Adult Education Act, to expand educational opportunities for adults and to encourage the establishment of programs of Adult Education that will:

PURPOSES:

1. Enable all adults to acquire basic skills necessary to function in society.

2. Enable adults who so desire to continue their education to at least the level of completion of secondary school.

3. Make available to adults the means to secure training that will enable them to become more employable, productive and responsible citizens.

GOALS:

1. To maintain and expand programs designed to increase the literacy rate in the State.

2. To maintain adult secondary education and GED preparation programs in all areas of established need in the State.

3. To increase literacy of non-English speaking adults.
