Assignment:
Students will explore the concept of abstraction in painting. Students may use mixed media to create an interesting composition with movement, repetition and texture. This is your opportunity to try something new and see where it goes. You will start with a basic sketch, but the painting may go in unexpected directions depending on the techniques you are working out on your practice paper. We will be looking at the work of Jo Toye. She is an abstraction artist who is well known for her textures and colors. She is an author as well, so you may want to consider purchasing her book if you would like to try lots of her techniques.
What is abstract expressionism?
a development of abstract art that originated in New York in the 1940s and 1950s and aimed at subjective emotional expression with particular emphasis on the creative spontaneous act (e.g., action painting). Leading figures were Jackson Pollock and Willem de Kooning.
