We are going to start the year by having some conversations about art and what is great art? What do we value in our society? How is a piece chosen for a museum? It is important to understand preferences and bias in art. So we are going to do a group project to get the conversation started. The goal is to keep this conversation going through-out your classes in the art dept.
We will also cover the theory of light and shade through the work of Sheri Lynn Boyer Doty. A link to her webpage can be found here on the Art instruction Blog. We will be referring to this page in class.
I will be focusing on this second presentation after we complete the group project above.

Unit 1:
Assignment: Drawing Fruit using various textural techniques
Draw cast and formed shadows using fruit, real or plastic
Students will create 3 images using stippling, hatching, or scumble, rendering with gradation, to create the illusion of dimension using fruit and dramatic lighting. Paper size 12 x 18 inches. Students will create a still life using fruit or vegetables. Students will overlap the objects to create depth. Dramatic side lighting will be used to create cast shadows.
