Advertisements are a powerful source of influence in our society. They are meant to make us buy something or act on an impulse. The may pluck at our heart strings or convince us to respond to a call of action. During this unit you will be looking at several different kinds of advertisement and analyzing their effects on you and the target audience they are attempting to reach.
Students will learn persuasive techniques used in advertising, specifically, pathos or emotion, logos or logic, and ethos or credibility/character. They will use this knowledge to analyze advertising in print and web based media. Students will also explore the concepts of demographics and marketing for a specific audience. The lesson will culminate in the production of an advertisement poster geared towards a specific group or social issue. Please refer to the following video for deeper understanding of these concepts.
Learning Targets:
Students will learn how to use Adobe Photoshop and/or In Design to create a advertisement for an organization that helps the community.
Students will use the rules of composition: overlapping to create depth, rule of thirds, golden ratio, s-curve or framing in their final work.
Students will learn new techniques in Photoshop through online tutorials and in class Photoshop instruction magazines.

Assignment: Students will design an advertisement poster for a local organization or to bring light to a social issue that affects their community or world. We will be looking at several artist through a variety of websites. 1-3 posters printed on 8x10 or larger paper will be due at the end of the unit. Students will shoot a minimum of 20 images of their own photographs to create the final poster(s). Consider who your audience is and what call to action are you asking of them? How will you convince them to buy into your organization or fight for the cause of your social issue?
