Zone of Proximal Development

A concept coined by Russian linguist Lev Vygotsky, that encourages teachers to find the level or range in which a student can perform a task with appropriate assistance to achieve a task, thus allowing students to extend their learning and instigate their development through challenging tasks and careful assistance. The mental activity that takes place when students are in their ZPD is sometimes called productive struggle.
