Shadow a Student

Shadowing a student for a half or full day can be an eye-opening, powerful experience. Grant Wiggins, co-author of Understanding by Design and educational leader, posted this blog piece about the sobering observations one teacher made while shadowing a high school student.

Prepare to Shadow

  • Create learning goals for your shadow day
  • Choose a student (in conjunction with a mentor teacher if you are a student teacher)
  • Coordinate with your student, parents, and staff
  • Meet your student

Shadow Activities

  • Meet your student at the bus stop
  • Shadow him or her for an entire day
  • Capture your learnings using low-inference observation notes
  • Share your observations, photos, and have fun!
