Fist to Five

Fist to Five is a student participation strategy.

Students use their fingers as a scale of zero (fist) to five to express understanding, agreement, or satisfaction.

For example, a teacher may ask: "Fist to five, fist is 'I have no idea what you are talking about' and five is 'I could teach this,' How well do you understand the idea of 'historical perspective' after today's lesson?" The teacher then takes a minute to scan the room, noting who they might need to follow up with or whose exit ticket they need to check carefully.

CAUTION: Student self-reports are not always reliable and a fist to five should be treated as only one piece of data.
