Pre-Assessment

Pre-assessments evaluate students needs and readiness to engage in new learning, and are used to inform planning and differentiation. With student achievement data as background and context, pre-assessments may include evaluations of students academic literacies, student mindsets towards learning, students individual learning strengths, and cultural or personal characteristics.

The pre-assessment iceberg describes the different types of pre-assessments, asserting that the assessments closer to the top of the iceberg rest on and partially result from the factors underneath them. This indicates, for example, that the teachers attention to students needs and the teachers cultural competence in responding to those needs is a contributor to academic literacies.
