Chair elections are proscribed in each department's governance document. When a new Chair is elected, the department election committee chairperson should draft a memo to the Dean that (1) certifies the election was held in accordance with the department's governance document, (2) indicates who was elected, and (3) gives the start and end date of their term as Chair. Once the Dean's Office receives this memo, the Dean's Office will take care of all required paperwork to effectuate the appointment.
The "paperwork" referenced above will do the following to the newly elected Chair's job record:
The tenured faculty position will be coded as leave without pay.
The Department Chair position number will be loaded onto the job record.
The current 9-month salary rate will be converted to a 12-month salary rate using the following formula: 1.22 X 9-mo salary rate.
An overload assignment using the Chair position number will be added to the job record for the monthly stipend.
This document outlines actions the Dean's office takes, the incoming Chair needs to take and what actions department staff need to take.
