In the event that the Chair will be gone for a week or longer, another member of the faculty may be designated as Acting Chair. During the summer months when faculty are off contract, the Associate Dean for Faculty may be available to be Acting Chair.
For time periods of less than one month, an email to the Associate Dean for Faculty, the Assistant Dean for Finance and Administration, and clasoffice@pdx.edu that gives signature authority to the appointee for a specific date range is sufficient for non-financial signature authority. For financial related signature authority, the PSU Signature Authorization Form must be completed.
For time periods of greater than one month, a memo to the Dean which designates who the Acting Chair will be and the reason for the extended assignment is needed. Upon the Dean's approval, the Dean's Office will take care of all required paperwork to effectuate the appointment. In addition, departmental staff will need to review the Chair transition checklist as some access items will be needed for the Acting Chair to be able to function fully in the role.
The "paperwork" referenced in the above checklist will do the following to the Acting Chair's job record:
No changes to the primary, tenured job record.
An overload assignment using the Chair position number will be added to the job record for the monthly stipend. The stipend for the elected Chair will be turned off for the same period of time. The stipend goes to only one person at a time.
