Monday, Feb. 28: LAST DAY OF FEBRUARY!
Quick whip about vacation: good? bad?
Short story work: final draft that letter OR first draft that letter and hand in story sheets
Portfolio assessment check: what are you missing? What do you have to do?
Recheck lexile scores and lets consider those as you go to pick out a book.
Let's talk plays.
h/w: if you haven’t finished the short story unit, you have work to do!
If you haven’t filled in your portfolio assignment sheet, you have work to do!
If you haven’t gotten a new independent reading book, you have work to do!
Tuesday, MARCH 1--I’m not a huge fan of March, but it’s closer to spring than February is!
Grammar activity
check in on portfolio assignments and book choices.
START DYORA: Design Your Own (Reading) Adventure
1. Find your lexile level. Ms. Smith will help us with this one!
2. Find a book that looks interesting to you in our library or our school that
•interests you for specific reasons you can explain: author? subject? recommendation? cover art? movie version?
•you have not read before: I’m not budging on this one!
•is at a reasonable lexile level (we will discuss--may be higher but should not be much lower)
•is of accepted literary quality (ie, not written by an idiot in 15 minutes, and not a ripped-off screen play)
•is of a length you’ll be likely to complete in three weeks (or less) of honest reading
•is available as an audiobook of some kind (this is not a deal breaker unless you really need that support).
Fill out the form for the book. The form will count as a grade, and it will require you to do some research, reading, and writing as well.
4. Get started reading it. You’ll be choosing one literary aspect of the book to discuss each time you read (protagonist once, then maybe setting, then maybe moral???), so you need to pay attention to what’s going on.
5. By the time you’ve completed the book, you’ll need to find
*three poems that remind you of the book in some way, OR
*three songs that remind you of the book in some way, OR
*a movie or tv show that reminds you of the book in some way.
These we’ll use for some kind of presentation about the book.
Each day we’ll read a little and also work on a portfolio task that you need to complete. IF YOU MISS CLASS, YOU SHOULD READ ON YOUR OWN AND WORK ON YOUR CHOSEN PORTFOLIO TASK!
--And, on Friday, we will have an inclass writing assignment like we did on the first Friday!
