Al Qaeda: a radical Sunni Muslim organization opposed to Western foreign policy and dedicated to eliminating a Western presence in Arab countries
ethnicity: noun: cultural, racial, religious or national traits that define a person as belonging to a particular group or tradition
empower: verb: to give authority or power to; to give someone the power or permission to do something for him/herself
fatwa: n: a legal opinion or order issued by an Islamic scholar or religious leader
infidel: n: a person who does not accept a particular faith; a person who doubts accepted teachings. Note: it’s an Arabic word first used to refer to non-Muslims; then Christians started using it to refer to non-Christians!!
Islam: proper noun: the religion of the Muslims, a monotheistic faith based on the teachings of Muhammad as the Prophet of Allah
legacy: n: a gift or inheritance; something handed down
literacy: n. the ability to read and write
mosque: n: Islamic center of worship
madrassa: n: a school or college, often attached to a mosque, where young men study religion
Muslim: n: someone belonging to the religion of Islam
nomad: n: a person who moves from place to place seasonally, often having a traditional route according to the food supply;
poverty: n: the state of being poor, of lacking an acceptable level of money or material possessions
refugee: n: a person who flees to a foreign country to escape persecution or danger
tenet: n: a belief, position, principle, or opinion that is true for a certain person or group
EXAMPLE: The basic tenets of Islam are called “the Five Pillars of Islam.” They include a commitment to pray five times a day and another to do good works.
