Monday, 9/15: Hi!
A little Kid President to inspire us this am!
Discuss ch. 5. . . . and then read ch. 6 aloud. WOW!
Frame/discuss/review two major assessments for OMM: plot/thought questions and thesis paper
Click here for model of the completed Little Red thesis paper!
h/w: complete ch. 6 questions and start reviewing the whole batch of them. They are due on Wed., 9/17; add "edited" to the title once you're reviewed them and feel they show your strong effort and skill! Also: choose the character you'd like to study for your thesis paper. I'd warn you away from Lennie as a character for reasons we'll discuss in class. Here's the actual text of the thesis paper ass't: TOPIC: Choose a well-developed character from the book (George, Slim, Candy, Crooks, or Curley's wife are all good options. Lennie is not recommended). Your goal is to write an essay analyzing your character’s personality, based on a careful selection of quotations (at least three) by, about, and/or directed toward the character. What kind of person is your character? What is his/her importance in the book? And here's the rubric.
Tuesday, 9/16:
DOG #5!
Discuss OMM a bit more. . . . themes and "so what"s?
WORK TIME: proof and thesis statements
h/w: finalize plot/thought questions forWed (remember to change title!) and craft a thesis based on your study of the book/chosen character
Wed. 9/17: Advisor Day! Here's a link to the rubric for the thought/plot questions, so you know what you're shooting for!
In class, share your best answer.
More thesis paper work: sharing those ideas: what makes a good thesis?
Working etc: topic sentences and the meat of the paper. Outline, graphic organizers, choices, etc.
h/w: bring in your topic sentences--tied to your quotations if possible.
Thursday, 9/18: HOMEWORK CLUB: DROP-IN FROM 2:30 - 4, or stay the whole time!
DOG #6
possible combination with Mr. Rush's class for more options for support/guidance/work: NO, NOT YET!
Focused check ins on thesis statements and topic sentences.
Start writing up that first draft of the paper!!
h/w: your first draft of the thesis paper is due by end of class on Monday. Complete outline?
Friday, 9/19: Is anyone bringing snacks?
If your outline is workable and complete, start writing. . . . If not, check this out! New organizer option that might be helpful.
Possibly combined with Mr. Rush's class?
h/w: get that draft going! Completed first draft due by end of class on Monday. Use check list and possible peer edit if you'd like earlier feedback!
Monday, 9/22
Inspirational video :)
Over view of how I'd like papers printed (please, avoid Helvetica!) and passed in: printed out this time, double spaced. Really.
WORK TIME with Mr. Arnold to sign into google classroom for future activity AND check on google docs.
Completed first draft handed in by end of class period!
h/w: no homework, unless your essay is not finished, or you would like to do the stretch option, which involves reading another Steinbeck story. . . .
**QUICK NOTE: Mr. Rush and I are working on shaping our gradebook to reflect the new standards-based approach to grading. . . It is still in the 'draft mode' and should only be checked for work completion information, not for actual class grades yet. Thanks! **
