Freshman English provides all students with an opportunity to develop their literacy, discussion, thinking, and time management skills with an eye to academic and career success. Ample support and enrichment options offer appropriate education for students of all skills. Classes will read a variety of genres (short story, novel, poetry, and drama), including Steinbeck's Of Mice and Men and a Shakespeare play; in addition, students will have an opportunity to pick independent books appropriate for their levels. Analytical writing will focus on the skills and conventions of the literary thesis paper, but effective voice and description in narrative writing are topics as well. Successful completion of the class will leave students with strengthened literacy skills, academic confidence for the rest of high school, and a developed sense of themselves as students.
