FAIRFIELD, Ohio — Funeral services were held June 11 for a 20-year-old Butler County soldier killed by a roadside bomb in Afghanistan. Services for Cpl. Nicholas Olivas were held at Sacred Heart Church in Fairfield, and he was buried at St. Mary’s cemetery in Hamilton.

The married father of a young son was killed in Zharay, Afghanistan, on May 30 when his unit was attacked by an improvised explosive device, military officials have said. The 2010 Fairfield High School graduate grew up in Hamilton and Fairfield. He attended grade school at St. Julie Billiart in Hamilton and high school in Fairfield, where he was a wrestler.

Olivas was an Army infantryman with the 82nd Army Airborne Division at Fort Bragg, N.C. He was awarded the Combat Infantry Badge in April. He joined the Army shortly after graduation and left for Afghanistan in February following the birth of his son, Connor. He was married to Faith Compton Olivas, a 2011 Fairfield Senior High School graduate.
