Sgt. Jonathan P. C. Kingman, 21, of Nankin, Ohio, died January 20, 2007, near Baji, Iraq, of wounds suffered when an improvised explosive device detonated near his vehicle.

Kingman was assigned to the 41st Engineer Company, 1st Engineer Battalion, 1st Brigade Combat Team, 1st Infantry Division, Fort Riley, Kan.

Kingman's former principal remembers him as a great kid who was always willing to pitch in.

"He always had a smile on his face and was willing to help out anywhere," said Jeff Hill. "I thought the military was a good choice for him because it gave him a focus. It was a good fit for him."

"He was just a good kid," said his aunt, Wilma Smith.

Kingman's father, Samuel, also served in Iraq and was there at the same time as his son in 2004-05. The younger Kingman was active with the basketball team and choir.

"He was very proud that he was going to go into the military. He thought that he and his father might be over there at the same time, at one point," said Bob Hagner, who spent several hours a day with Jonathan in the school's occupational work experience program. "He worked hard for his grades — he was very energetic and a very honest person."

Carver:  Gary Bradt lives in Norwalk and is a 20+ year carver. Gary served in the Air Force for 12 years.
