Lopez, who enlisted two years ago and worked as a mechanic, had recently been promoted, said his mother, Veronica Pacheco of Cleveland. He was scheduled to return home in 30 days.

He was based at Fort Knox, Ky., where his wife, Maria, lives with their two children, 6-year-old Lydia and 15-month-old Antonio.

A graduate of John Marshall High School, he was the oldest of nine children, the blended families of his widowed mother and his stepfather, Santos Pacheco…
