The Rev. David Maly recalled Kenneth T. Butler as a goal-oriented young man — on the football field and off. "Tyler was a guy who understood the difference between running north and south and running east and west. He kept his life goal-directed. Tyler wanted excellence, to be the best he possibly could be." Butler, 21, of East Liverpool, Ohio, was killed Feb. 1 in Baghdad in a vehicle accident. He was a 2004 high school graduate and was assigned to Schofield Barracks. "Tyler had an uncanny ability to see into people, to look through you, to reflect your own insecurities and hang-ups back at you, until you had no choice but to drop them," said Pfc. Cordell Knapp. "Tyler called your bluff every time." He told his parents he wanted to join the Army and become a military policeman to prepare for a career in law enforcement. "He had taken criminal justice courses in high school and had ridden with police officers to see what their jobs were like," said his father, Kenneth. His widow, Ashley Butler, said her husband was looking forward to seeing his son, Austin, who was born Jan. 23. "He loved his baby more than anything," she said.
