"Mike, we were friends and neighbors in Fort Polk, LA. You were part of the "Melrose Gang". Not sure how, but it seems like it was always your Birthday when we went to the "WagonMaster" in Leesville. Hey, we just wanted the free dessert and the song from the waiters. You played it well every time and just smiled. Thanks, I miss you!!"     Sylvia, CA

"I was one of Mike's platoon leaders at Fort Polk with 1/2ACR. I guess you could say I was one of his problem children, always causing him grief over something because I thought I knew better (I didn't). It was only over the years that I realized just how much Mike taught me, especially about what it meant to be a company commander. Through example, Mike taught me about passion for life and compassion for others. And despite the brotherly squabbling, Mike was forgiving enough to still teach me what it meant to be a good officer.... but he taught me even more ~ through a special, uncle-type relationship he developed with my daughter, Kayla, he taught me how to be a good dad (he called her "Spider-Monkey," her nickname to this day) . It never took long for Mike to make an imprint on someone's life ~ young or old. I was serving in Iraq at the time of Mike's death. I had been in email contact with him, to include one last email the day before he was killed, in which he told me to be safe and "to keep my head down." That was Mike - more worried about others than himself to the very end. I am in debt to Mike for many things. He will not be forgotten. Cheers"     Justin Considine, Fort Bragg NC …

"I served with Mike at Fort Polk and in the 21 years of Army Service I never met a finer Officer or man. I always knew that I could lean on him when I needed help. He was a soldiers soldier and a mans man. I will never forget you Mike and the support that you gave me when I needed it. To Mikes parents, my hat is off to you. You raised a man that I will look up to for as long as I live. I am very sorry for your loss and hope you find some comfort in knowing that Mike has influenced hundreds if not thousands people.
