If a student leaves the school during the academic year, all the teacher needs to do is go to Manage Students, and remove the student (and probably add a new student in their place), This does not delete the student, all of their work is still safe in Seesaw, and will be until the end of the year, when it will be archived along with all the other work from that school year.
Parents can access their child's LJ themselves and download any of the media they see at any point during the year, however if they would like, they can use their own account to download the entire Learning Journal in its entirety, instructions from Seesaw are here. All of the original media will be intact, but it will not look exactly the same as does when presented within the Seesaw platform, see below.
Go to Account Settings:
Scroll down to Journal Archives, then click Download Journal
You'll end up with a zipped file downloaded (works on Windows PCs and Macs), how long this takes will depend on how much is in the journal, and how fast your internet connection is...
Downloaded Archive
When it's finished downloading, open the zipped file to expand it into an archive folder containing all of your child's work, organised by months, inside you'll see a web page that hosts the content, and the embedded media:
You can either open the embedded media, eg the video, or image, or copy it to another location that you prefer to use. If you open the web page you'll see an archived representation of the original post, it won't look exactly the same as it did when viewed on the Seesaw platform, but all of the original content, including any captions will be retained, but unfortunately no comments (for privacy reasons).
Here's an example of how a Seesaw post will look after it has been downloaded:
Students who leave at the end of the year or mid year will continue to have access to their LJs as long as the college maintains the school Seesaw account. The departed students Learning Journals will be 'frozen' - no new items, comments, etc will be added since they won't be in an active class.
If the new school they join uses Seesaw, the parents can use the same email address when the new school/class gives out parent access. For now, it will show up as Sean1 and Sean2 since Seesaw won't move content from school 1 into school2 and the id will change.
For parents who aren't moving to a Seesaw school, they will maintain access to their child's (suspended, inactive) content in Seesaw for as long as the college maintains a Seesaw subscription, or at least 60 days if we discontinued our school subscription.
Older students who use their School Google Email account to sign in (Grades 1 -5) can also download their own learning journal as a .zip archive of their own work from the Seesaw website via Account Settings. They can click on their profile (top left) > Gear icon > Account Settings > Download Journal Archives and save their archive from each class.
