Who's in Charge Around Here?

So . . .

How often does that question come to your mind?  Who is really in charge around here anyway.  We live in a world where the people who seem to be in charge are more a source of distress than comfort at times . . . so it is a real question.  Who really is in charge?

So, what does good, solid, moral leadership look like?  That is what David reflects on in his last words recorded for us in 2 Samuel 23.  This morning Pastor Jon invites us to reflect on the qualities of leadership.  Whether we govern out of fear or power or individual or national self interest, or out of grace and genuine concern for others, matters.  How do we use our authority?  How do we use the power we have?  How well do we reflect God, as people who invited to lead in a world as people who are supposed to reflect that image?  Much to think about here!

2 Samuel 23

ESV

Now these are the last words of David:

The oracle of David, the son of Jesse,

    the oracle of the man who was raised on high,

the anointed of the God of Jacob,

    the sweet psalmist of Israel]

2 “The Spirit of the Lord speaks by me;

    his word is on my tongue.

3 The God of Israel has spoken;

    the Rock of Israel has said to me:

When one rules justly over men,

    ruling in the fear of God,

4 he dawns on them like the morning light,

    like the sun shining forth on a cloudless morning,

    like rain that makes grass to sprout from the earth.

5 “For does not my house stand so with God?

    For he has made with me an everlasting covenant,

    ordered in all things and secure.

For will he not cause to prosper

    all my help and my desire?
