A Song for the Journey
Three times a year, the children of Israel "went up" to Jerusalem for special feasts and celebrations that were held there. The "songs of ascent" are the songs they sung as they traveled "up" to Jerusalem. This particular group of songs (psalms) were those that they sang on their Journeys on the way to Jerusalem. Songs for the road, if you will.
Any of us who have been "on the road" for awhile, know what the road may bring. This song resonates with many aspects of our experience as we travel on that road together. The signposts and landmarks we encounter include crying out from the depths, forgiveness, waiting, watching, and finding hope. And, it is the dynamics of this journey that Pastor Jon explores with us this morning in Psalm 130. Take a few moments to listen to the psalm, and notice the places where you want to, where you need to, sing along.
If you would like to listen to the sermon once again, or perhaps for the first time, you can access our sermon library here. Or, if you prefer, you can watch the livestream of the entire service here.
A song of ascents.
1
Out of the depths I cry to you, Lord;
2
Lord, hear my voice.
Let your ears be attentive
to my cry for mercy.
3
If you, Lord, kept a record of sins,
Lord, who could stand?
4
But with you there is forgiveness,
so that we can, with reverence, serve you.
5
I wait for the Lord, my whole being waits,
and in his word I put my hope.
6
I wait for the Lord
more than watchmen wait for the morning,
more than watchmen wait for the morning.
7
Israel, put your hope in the Lord,
for with the Lord is unfailing love
and with him is full redemption.
8
He himself will redeem Israel
from all their sins.
