Psalm 23

A Song to Remember

If you have ever kept a journal, you know how meaningful it can be you look back on those aspects of your experience that have impacted you in profound ways.  Some of those entries may reflect times of hope and joy, others times of discouragement, confusion, maybe even despair.  You will find this same range as you look through the Psalms, songs for all occasions, psalms for the whole journey of life.  Good things.  Hard things.  Reassuring things.  Psalm 23 is a psalm of reassurance and remembrance.

One of the reasons this Psalm is so loved, is that it covers the wide range of experiences that we encounter in life.  Times of generous grace and refreshment, times of guidance through dark episodes in life, time of God's presence even in times of opposition, times of affirmation during times when affirmation is scarce, and assurance of God's continual involvement and presence throughout eternity.  It is a powerful psalm.

That is what Pastor Pablo invites us to reflect upon this morning, and what we'd like to invite you to do as well.  Take a few moments to take the psalm line by line, thought by thought, image by image and note what surfaces for you, and how it speaks to you.  Notice the image of the Shepherd, and reflect on how Jesus used this imagery to describe His ministry and care for us.  Notice the rich imagery of God as host as well - there is much here to consider as we think about how Jesus also built on this imagery in His ministry.

Psalm 23

(NIV)

A psalm of David

The Lord is my shepherd, I lack nothing.

    He makes me lie down in green pastures,

he leads me beside quiet waters,

    he refreshes my soul.

He guides me along the right paths

    for his name’s sake.

Even though I walk

    through the darkest valley,

I will fear no evil,

    for you are with me;

your rod and your staff,

    they comfort me.

You prepare a table before me

    in the presence of my enemies.

You anoint my head with oil;

    my cup overflows.

Surely your goodness and love will follow me

    all the days of my life,

and I will dwell in the house of the Lord

    forever.
