Hidden Treasure & Fine Pearls

Treasure & Pearls

What are your treasures?  What are the things you value most? What would you be willing to do to protect or ensure them?  We live in a world that often seems confused about what things are worth protection, investment, sacrifice, or ultimately of value - which often makes questions like these more challenging than they might otherwise be.

Jesus told stories, parables, about treasures and things of value, and how we relate to things like these.  If fact, Jesus often told stories and parables.  There are reasons for this.  Stories have a way of helping us to see, and understand, and slip past the defenses we erect in order to make sure we do not hear.  They help us to see what we might otherwise miss.  They help us to hear what we might otherwise turn a deaf ear to.  That in itself says a lot about Him, and a lot about us.

With sermon, Pastor Jon begins a series on the parables of Jesus that we will be exploring together.  We hope they will have to opportunity to slip past our resistance so we can hear what it is that God wants to say.  This week we begin the parables of the Hidden Treasure and Fine Pearls.  You can read the text to the right.  We hope you will do so thoughtfully as you reflect on the words of Jesus.

A merchant in search of treasure and pearls.  He finds something amazing, and everything changes for him.  Everything.  The change is profound. Has what you have found in Jesus risen to that level of value for you? For those who find it, the "sacrifice" seems very small.   It's an amazing story, but what it points to is even more amazing.

Matthew 13

NIV

44 “The kingdom of heaven is like treasure hidden in a field. When a man found it, he hid it again, and then in his joy went and sold all he had and bought that field.

45 “Again, the kingdom of heaven is like a merchant looking for fine pearls.46 When he found one of great value, he went away and sold everything he had and bought it.

The Message

44 “God’s kingdom is like a treasure hidden in a field for years and then accidentally found by a trespasser. The finder is ecstatic—what a find!—and proceeds to sell everything he owns to raise money and buy that field.

45-46 “Or, God’s kingdom is like a jewel merchant on the hunt for excellent pearls. Finding one that is flawless, he immediately sells everything and buys it.
