The Other Side

Mark 4 (NIV)

That day when evening came, he said to his disciples, “Let us go over to the other side.” 36 Leaving the crowd behind, they took him along, just as he was, in the boat. There were also other boats with him. 37 A furious squall came up, and the waves broke over the boat, so that it was nearly swamped. 38 Jesus was in the stern, sleeping on a cushion. The disciples woke him and said to him, “Teacher, don’t you care if we drown?”

39 He got up, rebuked the wind and said to the waves, “Quiet! Be still!” Then the wind died down and it was completely calm.

40 He said to his disciples, “Why are you so afraid? Do you still have no faith?”

41 They were terrified and asked each other, “Who is this? Even the wind and the waves obey him!”

Are you ready to take the journey to the other side?

A Song for Reflection

The Other SideStorage wars.  If you've ever seen the program, you have seen the drama involved in taking a risk on something you can't really, fully know, until you make the investment.  Things are about to change, but you won't fully know what that means until you are already engaged in the purchase.  Disciples experience this.  In the story we are looking at this week, Jesus tells them that it is time to go over to the other side.  It's not that the disciples had come to that conclusion, but that that was where Jesus was directing them.  And so they go.  They leave a situation that was looking promising in many ways, to move toward something that was completely unknown to them.  They only thing they know is that that is where Jesus has sent them.

That would have been challenging enough, except that the first thing they encounter is a pretty significant storm - and in the midst of it all, God may be with them in the boat, but He is asleep.  Seemingly non-responsive.  "Don't you care if we drown?"  This is not a good feeling!  What is the nature of the fear?

These are the dynamics of many stories experienced by many disciples.  These are the dynamics that Pastor Pablo explores with us in the sermon this week.  If you would like to listen to the sermon once again, or perhaps for the first time, you can access our sermon library by clicking here
