Galatians 5:16-20 (TNIV)

 16 So I say, walk by the Spirit, and you will not gratify the desires of the sinful nature. 17 For the sinful nature desires what is contrary to the Spirit, and the Spirit what is contrary to the sinful nature. They are in conflict with each other, so that you are not to do whatever  you want. 18 But if you are led by the Spirit, you are not under the law.

Luke 2 (TNIV)

8 And there were shepherds living out in the fields nearby, keeping watch over their flocks at night. 9 An angel of the Lord appeared to them, and the glory of the Lord shone around them, and they were terrified. 10 But the angel said to them, "Do not be afraid. I bring you good news of great joy that will be for all the people. 11 Today in the town of David a Savior has been born to you; he is the Messiah, the Lord. 12 This will be a sign to you: You will find a baby wrapped in cloths and lying in a manger."

    13 Suddenly a great company of the heavenly host appeared with the angel, praising God and saying,

Philippians 4 (TNIV)

   4 Rejoice in the Lord always. I will say it again: Rejoice! 5 Let your gentleness be evident to all. The Lord is near. 6 Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. 7 And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.

    8 Finally, brothers and sisters, whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable—if anything is excellent or praiseworthy—think about such things. 9 Whatever you have learned or received or heard from me, or seen in me—put it into practice. Prayers for Peace

Lord, make me an instrument of your peace

where there is hatred, let me sow love;

where there is injury, pardon

where there is doubt, faith;

where there is despair, hope;

where there is darkness, light;

and where there is sadness, joy.O Divine Master,

grant that I may not seek so much to be consoled, as to console;

to be understood, as to understand;

to be loved, as to love;

for it is in giving that we receive,

it is in pardoning that we are pardoned,

and it is in dying that we are born to Eternal Life.

Other prayers for peace

In his sermon, Pastor Jon speaks about the nightly practice of singing Silent Night, and the opportunity it provides to reflect on the refrain, "Sleep in heavenly peace, sleep in heavenly peace."  So, do we?  Has peace taken root in our lives to the extent that our both our sleeping and waking hours allow us to rest there?  To what extent do we live at peace, and what do we mean by that?  Maybe even more importantly, what does God mean by that? 

Moreover, what does a life that experiences this kind of peace look like?  Does it move at a different pace or with a different rhythm?  Does it focus its attention in different places?  What makes it unique in the midst of other lives that are characterized more by restlessness and anxiety?

19 The acts of the sinful nature are obvious: sexual immorality, impurity and debauchery; 20 idolatry and witchcraft; hatred, discord, jealousy, fits of rage, selfish ambition, dissensions, factions 21 and envy; drunkenness, orgies, and the like. I warn you, as I did before, that those who live like this will not inherit the kingdom of God.

    22 But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, 23 gentleness and self-control. Against such things there is no law. 24 Those who belong to Christ Jesus have crucified the sinful nature with its passions and desires. 25 Since we live by the Spirit, let us keep in step with the Spirit. 26 Let us not become conceited, provoking and envying each other.
